Creating backing tracks from scratch?

I guess this is a question for some of the more experienced backing track makers here. I'm pretty familiar with making backing tracks out of midi files using synthfont, but my question is how difficult would it be to create them from scratch? There are plenty of songs that don't have midi files available for them and I may even want to start writing my own songs soon that will need backing tracks made for them.

Right now, I know very little to nothing about using drum loops or sequencing or even what programs to use for them. My search of the web for information turned up pretty dry. Can anyone point me in the right direction for how to get started on this? What programs do you use?

Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

axslinger is an unknown quantity at this point
Not sure I have the time or patience to start from scratch. But what I do is use GuitarPro to tab my originals into and then tab the drum and bass parts in, then export to a MIDI file. Thinking about it as I type this it might be easier to just use FL Studio to just make the drum and bass parts

I have used premade GuitarPro files before and they work quite well most of the time. The thing is I don't know how to play the drums, so I know this puts me a major disadvantage.
