COMMENT
This concert is also circulating on 'The Bridal Path' 2004 release by The Dutch Invasion, however it should be noted this is a completely different source recording. Overall the recording is every bit as excellent (EX-) as The Dutch Invasion release in terms of actual sound quality - the audience level is unobtrusive, the show is loud and clear, and the person responsible has done a mighty decent effort. However this Pure Funk release suffers from a number of skips throughout the recording which do slightly detract from the show itself. Overall there are maybe 20 max, but they occur with enough frequency to be worthy of mention, and it's for this reason alone that 'The Bridal Path' is a superior release to me as it is free of any glitches. That said, this is still a very satisfying release containing an enjoyable (if slightly routine) Musicology show. The first half of the show is pretty pedestrian, and whilst it is a joy to listen to, there is nothing really worthy of comment. The acoustic set is approx. 24 minutes long (including '7') and not only includes a rare performance of '17 Days', but also Prince manages to plug his upcoming appearance on Much More Music, "Sunday night at 9 o'clock!" added to this he manages to squeeze in a number of improvised guitar flourishes which make this acoustic set slightly more interesting than the norm. The undisputed high point of the show is a stunning 11 minute 'Whole Lotta Love' featuring sublime guitar solo's and a fierce solo from John Blackwell before Prince and Mr. Blackwell duel on the mic/drums - has to be heard to be appreciated. As mentioned before, this is an impressive recording, however the glitches that plague the recording mean that this release is second best to The Dutch Invasion release of 2004. We should be thankful that we have an equally excellent recording to fall back on.
