The Stranglers - Before They Were Famous 1974

I only have around 6 or 7 Stranglers songs from 1974 during the Hans Warmling era, and I noticed that the full 1974 demos set is circulating as "Before They Were Famous", anyone have it?

Don't know what the f**k happened there! Anyway:

1): Fulham Demos: Wasted - Strnge Little - My Young Dreams - Railway Tavern: 1975: Princess Of Sts - 1978 Demos: Grip - Bitchin' Go Buddy.

This is the one I think you may have.

Other one is:

2): "The Complete Early Demos: 1974-76" (bit of a boast?):
Fulham TW Demos: Wasted - Strange Little Girl #1 - My Young Dreams #1 - Chinatown - Charlie Boy - I Know It -Strange Little Girl #2 - Make You Mine - My Young Dreams #2 - Mountain Studios: Wales: March 1978: Peaches - Bitchin' - Tomorrow Was (The Hereafter) - Sewer - Worthing Pebble Beach Studios: July 1976: Grip - Bitchin' - Buddy - would have to listen to again to see if same as 1978 Demos in 1) above.

I don't know of any others (certainly Demos unless someone is keeping them to themselves) apart from the fact that a gig was recorded in a pub in Guildford on a machine with a built in mic hidden in a carrier bag. Whether this still exists I don't know but as Joy Division fans know, stranger things have happened! It is probably hiding in someone's loft!

Can post either (or both) of these tonight or earl tomorrow morning (UK time) if interested.

Okay, thanks for the call!

I do indeed have 1) you mentioned, but you also forgot to mention one thing, that it had the Hammersmith Odeon 1976 gig from the pack, and they sounded great. Everything is captured in very good sound quality here.

And yes, 2) has some stuff I do have a hard time trying to download, or trying to get here such as: Wasted - Strange Little Girl #1 - My Young Dreams #1 - Chinatown - Charlie Boy - I Know It -Strange Little Girl #2 - Make You Mine - My Young Dreams #2

I'm not sure if Wasted, or one of the 2 Strange Little Girl versions or the My Young Dreams versions are the same...but I would like to have everything from number 2 just to check if some are the same, and to also enjoy it! HOWEVER, I do have the Mountain Studio demos from 1975 already which came as a multi download that had the Rock Goes To College riot show from 1978. As for the July 1976 demos here, I'm not sure if it could be the same print as 1) but I would also like it just to check.

So yeah, thanks for the call again...sdoughty09@gmail.com!!

However, there are a few more 1974 tracks I've found: Country Chaser, White Wedding, and Bouncing Man which are on YouTube and I already have along with the 3 tracks from the 74-75-76 album. There's also another mentioning of a 1974 demo song called Evening Shadow which I can not find anywhere so I would like that track too.

I'm not sure if that's all the tracks mentioned, but there are supposed to be 19 tracks. And only 16 tracks have been found, but that should be good enough. So far I have this track list: (tracks marked with a star "*" means I already have the tracks)

Wasted*, My Young Dreams*, Strange Little Girl*, Wasted (possible alternate?) Strange Little Girl (version 1), My Young Dreams (version 1), Chinatown, Charlie Boy, I Know It, Strange Little Girl (version 2), Make You Mine, My Young Dreams (version 2), White Wedding*, Country Chaser*, Bouncing Man*, Evening Shadow.

If only I could find out about those 3 other missing tracks from 1974 sessions...

So yeah, thanks for the call again...sdoughty09@gmail.com!! Please post when you have the time! Thanks!!

Hi

First of all I've just put up the following:

Early Demos & Live: 1974-76: http://www.mediafire.com/?6iphlj2ix6iu94b

Complete Early Demos: 1974-76: http://www.mediafire.com/?i87hbz744s9f643

"The Request Show": 1977-83: http://www.mediafire.com/?6j09t2sz03ca809

Put The Request Show up as I've had a few requests for it.

According to www.strangled.co.uk/74Demos/74Demos.html, they did the following Demos:

1974 The Guildford StranglersJet Black (drums) / Hugh Cornwell (guitar, vocals) / J.J. Burnel (bass guitar, vocals) / Hans Wärmling (guitar)
Go Buddy Go
My Young Dreams (written by Hans and Hugh)
Strange Little Girl (written by Hans and Hugh)
Bouncing Man (First Punk song according to Jet Black)
Chinatown (Hans Warmling instrumental)
I Know It (written by JJ and Hugh)
Country Chaser
White Wedding
Make You Mine
Shut Up
Mean To Me
Promises
Evening Shadow (written by Jet Black)
Ice Cream Salesman
Rock 'n' Roll Music (Chuck Berry cover)
Money (That's What I Want) (Barrett Strong cover)
Fun Fun Fun (Beach Boys cover)
Jeannie Jeannie Jeannie (cover)
I Saw Her Standing There (Beatles cover sung by Hugh)
Twist And Shout (Isley Brothers cover)
Walk On By (Dionne Warwick cover sung by Hugh)
Flame (Slade cover)
If (David Gates cover sung by Jet)
Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree (Tony Orlando & Dawn cover)
------

Guildford Home Demos: 1974
Country Chaser
Make You Mine
I Know It (written by JJ and Hugh)
Charlie Boy (written by JJ and Hugh)
Chinatown (Hans Warmling instrumental)
Evening Shadow (written by Jet)
White Wedding

Demos rejected by Island Records / Courtney Music / Bell Records
My Young Dreams 9version one)
My Young Dreams (version two)
Strange Little Girl
Wasted

So I haven't got "Country Chaser", "White Wedding", "Bouncing Man" or "Evening Shadow" (a Jet song). If you could possibly post these up that would be wonderful!

As regards the 3 missing ones, looking at the above there are unfortunately quite a few more. The covers of old R&R classics would be interesting but we live in hope!

Hope there's something here you haven't already got & enjoy!

Thank you so much man!!!!

Yes, the 1975 Wales and the 1976 3 Early demos are the same as what I had before. Wasted, My Young Dreams (ver. 1) and Strange Little Girl (ver. 1) from comp #2 are the exact same as on compilation #1 (which is basically 74-75-76 without the Hammersmith gig from 10-23-76 which I already have and is a great set). Others than that, the 6 other tracks are completely different!

Here is the tracks you wanted (minus Evening Shadow as I can't find the song):
BOUNCING MAN: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HndXXJHJEbY
COUNTRY CHASER: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQY4i_wwlRU
WHITE WEDDING: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmXCzBJ4r0g

As for the other tracks, especially the whole load of 1974 I have just found out from the list (thanks for giving me it), both of us (along with all other fans) are hoping that we have all those tracks. Maybe they will pop one day by another one of those people on this forum.

WHICH REMINDS ME!!!!!!

According to the trade list I have just found, there are two different forms of 1974 demos! The Safari with 12 tracks, and Before They Were Famous with 19 tracks! I think I know the track list here now, thanks for the help!!!!

SAFARI TRACKS:
Country Chaser
Make You Mine
I Know It
Charliei Boy
Chinatown
Evening Shadow
White Wedding
My Young Dreams (version one)
My Young Dreams (version two)
Strange Little Girl
Wasted

(I have all those tracks now, except Evening Shadow.)

BEFORE THEY WERE FAMOUS (MY BEST GUESS IF THERE IS 19 OUT OF 24):
Go Buddy Go
Bouncing Man
Chinatown
I Know It
Make You Mine
Shut Up
Mean To Me
Promises
Ice Cream Salesman
Rock 'n' Roll Music
Money (That's What I Want)
Fun Fun Fun
Jeannie Jeannie Jeannie
I Saw Her Standing There
Twist And Shout
Walk On By
Flame
If
Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree

(I only have Bouncing Man. Chinatown, Make You Mine and I Know It is probably the exact same thing as the Safari versions, except better quality. So that is probably four tracks I have from this.)

Thanks for those links. Would love to hear their version of "Tie A Yellow Ribbon ..." but sadly don't think we ever will! Maybe getting backstage before a gig & persuading Jet to do it is the way - I used this tactic with Wil from the Bunnymen once & got a dedication for my wife on her birthday!

Looking forward to those Youtube clips.
