Look, I said it already and I'll say it again.

I was really, really flipping drunk when i vented.............this thread can be deleted for all I give a shit.

I had just downloaded yet another show where ya couldn't even understand what the fuck was being played or sung. It was a piece of shit in a long drunk night of bad downloads...............and I snapped.

I'M SORRY!

If there are folks out there who want to upload shit, and not post any warning that it is crap and let someone find out after he wastes time & bandwidth to download.......so be it. Whatever.

I hit a frustrated breaking point the other night, everything I dl'd looked great until i "tried" to listen to it. All of it sounded like cats being murdered. That might be music for some I guess.

A warning would be nice is all. Like: "the band sounds like crap, and the singer is across the street in the pisser downstairs under the boiler, but I liked it so here is the download link"

I refuse to drink & download anymore. I, also, will try not to be an asshole again. Hopefully folks will stop posting replies and this thread can just disappear into the 101 darkness.

Again, I am sorry I offended some of you.

i have a feeling this is directed at me, and thats cool. my response -- initial response that is -- was harsh, no doubt.

second post by me i thought clarified things a bit -- i;d read more of the thread, and thought the french-kiss attitudinal approach was more appropriate. i certainly can understand your frustration, but at the same time, figured since you'd bought your attitude a few drinks, it should be entitled to a little bit of play

seems that eveybody thinks there should be more info posted at every turn; it could hardly be a bad thing.

paint it black.

paint it black, you devil.

Nothing is directed at anyone.

Like Shultz said on Hogans Hero's "I see nothing, I know nothing" LOL

Dino , if you've convinced anyone to notate posts with, at the very least, thier opinion of sound quality, you have helped us all.

I can sure hear the difference between 320 and flac lvl 6. with Mp3s you get almost a sound like its a 3rg gen instead of a master. you can hear a faint whirring..or for me a pretty loud whirring

Dino,
-I fully agree that grading the sound quality is a significant issue.
-I too am sick of "A" (EX) ratings sounding like "c" or worse.
-It is also somewhat laughable that someone worries about a "c-d" sounding boot being in Lossless!!!
-As far as the FLAC v MP3, whatever the poster wants to do is his/hers business.
-that being said, I/(everyone?) wants higher bit-rate MP3's 256/320/FLAC(with latest/greatest/best settings encoder) and not re-encoded or re-re-encoded.....
-As zep_master said the lower the bitrates, the more you can hear the faint whirring or other artifacts.

Keep up the good work everyone (cheers)!!!!

and a paw up to princess!!!!!

I loved your post... I also have been on the end of a drunken rant ( which got me banned for awhile at other sites)
It seems some of us old schoolers like to know the source (Aud, FM, SB etc) and quality (generation, from tape copy, or original etc) rather than what bitrate it is or if I have artwork or included a password -

Rant On !!!!

I will say though..... this is one of the better of the sites about people including info -

BTW- my drunken posts seem to have alot more typos and errors than yours did - nice job

It's okay to rant. Even our own Jimmy Page has his rants, (just listen to White Summer - Black Mountain Side from the 77-80 tours)

I know you want people to stop posting, so naturally here i am.

Your work has done wonders, but i feel the time has come for 1 unified system of rating sound quality. Though i agree with aiko's rating system, perhaps we should tone it down a bit.

We need to clarify the nature of the recording (soundboard, audience, FM broadcast, etc.), then give it a rating.

We also need to point out dropouts, clicks, distortion, anything that would detract from the overall listenability of the recording.

And if at all possible, note the lineage of the recording

It would be nice if we could have the recording device noted down for reference, but sadly most people do not.

I usually listen to my recordings about 3-4 times in a row to get a general sound quality rating from them. If i post absolutely HORRID boots, it's most usually to fill a request.

that's just my take on it.

Your post was funny! You were drunk - oh really?? Couldn't tell - ha ha!! Anyway, I agree with much of what you said, and have often felt the same way. There is always an exception - a concert of great historical significance where listening to a crap audience recording is the only way to hear it, since no better recording has ever come to light. But these are exceptions that "prove the rule", as the saying goes, rather than exceptions that mathematically disprove the rule.
