a one off jam

Hey guys ,

this is really really off the cuff. ..

i had this idea for a riff in my head so i put down a drum beat and the both guitars are first take ... so be nice lol

tell me what you think of the tone , first time i've been able to record with my 5150 !

there are soooo many mistakes , so keep that in mind too !

Stigs,

I like your playing but I'm not a huge fan of the "thin" sound. Just my personal preference, really. I do like the musicianship you display on this tune - good work.

I think it's probably more in your settings than your pickups, what sort of amp are you using? I would try to play with the setings a it to get a little more mid-range.

Re: a one off jam

i'm using the 5150 II

i put the low on like 8 , the high on a bout 5/6 .. the mid on like 1/2 ... the pre gain on about 5 and the post depending on how loud i want it .. then i put the "Presence" on 6 and the "Resonance" on like 9 ...

i guess that'll only really mean something to people with a 5150 .. but any help would be appreciated .. i've never really liked the lead tone that i seem to come out with ...

First off, that's some really tasty playing, Stig. I like the backing tracks almost as much as I like the lead, and that's always a good sign of a well-written tune. Good work, man.

Now, on to that tone issue -

the mid on like 1/2

That's the rub, right there, man. You need to boost those mids. It may sound odd to your ears at first, but you'll notice a warm difference especially when playing back recordings. The first thing people twaek is always the bass and treble, and it's the mids that really fill out your tone.

Bottom line is this (to me, anyway) :

Any amp worth it's pricetag - and a 5150 definitely should fall in that category - should never have such a blatant gap in the levels of the EQ settings in order to sound good. Meaning, if you have your bass on 5, the mids and highs shouldn't be more than one or two notches different. Try boosting those mids up, and it may seem "louder" to you, which is ok. You'll "feel" the notes a little more (physically) when the amp is turned up, so just adjust your volume accordingly to keep from irritating any cohabitants or neighbors. Re: a one off jam

thanks for the help wolfman !

i'll start fiddling with it tomorrow and see what comes up , i had a quick fiddle just now and your right it sounds quite odd to me with the mid up a bit but i'll see what happens when i can record and crank my amp a bit more (It's like midnight here atm)

thanks for your comments on the song too !

Stiglar,

This sounds very nice. Reminds me of something Vai would play.

Cool stuff, bro!
