I'm a BIG fan of this guy. I saw him in my home town and all my mate told me was that he was Ry Cooder's fave guitarist...quite an accolade for someone I'd never heard of. He ambled on with two acoustics, no stands (so he had to put them on the floor). He was wearing a wooly hat, a jumper and was enigmatic beyond belief. He played this wierd style of bluegrass meets blues and he picked like a maniac. I was impressed because it was just him, his guitar and his voice and he held everybodies attention...you could hear a pin drop. He started playing this track which is called 'Katy' and could be described as a murder ballad. He tapped the beginning and I've never seen anything like it since (I've seen that Eric Sardanas guy BTW). It wasn't rock tapping but it was amazing. Then he started singing this song. I've tried to work out the story and I think it goes like this...first line goes 'Katy's down by the cellar door'...I think Katy is actually a ghost of someone he had an affair with and she killed herself. Then there's a line that goes, 'My little one's mother sit's crying' and the hairs on my arms go...every time. The reason I find this so good is not just the guitar playing...there's so much emotion in the vocal. I think this is the same with Clapton...I listen to his singing on stuff like 'Before You Accuse Me' moreso than his playing; I think it's the sign of a true musician with something to say that goes beyond playing an instrument.
Anyway, I've harped on but thats because this is one of the songs that always gets emotion stirred in me. Some of you may not like it BUT listen to it intently and hear what he's saying. This is
