BassThang! Is this JUST an mp3 forum?
There was this little lick that I came up with one day at practice. The guitar player in the band told me that he dug it and that I needed to work it out. Well, one Saturday last fall I put my kid down for a nap and locked myself in my studio. 3 Heineken’s later I had this little tune. I was a little buzzed, so I grabbed the video camera instead of the tape recorder and shot this. I had 2 passes at it (this is the second) and then my kid awoke (as you can plainly see at the end). The think about this is that it does sound cool, but I have yet to find anything to do with it. The guitarist and I struggled to add some guitar, strings, B3, whatever, but nothing worked. It always sounded good standing alone. We were gonna keep it as a short bass solo, but I left the band before playing it live. If you guys have any ideas on what to do, by all means, grab it and mess with it. It is a video (18 MB worth), so dialup need not apply. Sorry. Maybe I should get off my larger ass and convert it. Ah, perhaps after another beer… Bassthang! (Video) Bassthang! (MP3) -Trip (Edit: added MP3) |

Re: BassThang!I've seen this before, and it was totally cool. Funny spot of the kid walking in the room half-asleep on camera, too.

Re: BassThang! That was wondeful, Trip! Thanks for sharing this moment.
Was that little Trip walking in at the end of this Heineken-induced rêverie piece? This is really a great piece of music. You need to develop it, or even leave it as is, and use if as a transitional instrumental. Great playing |

Re: BassThang!Wow, fantastic piece of music. Loved watching it, you're very into the music. Could it be a heineken induced moment ?
You do make that bass look small though, and I mean that as a complimant, you play it so comfortably and effortlessly. The only stuff I'd expect to go to it is long slow guitar sounds. Sort of like Respect The Wind, if you get my drift. But I don't know whether it would work. Maybe it doesn't need anything else added to it.... I'm certainly not the man to attempt it ! Good work though, cool with the kid at the end !!! |

Re: BassThang!I gotta throw a little plug in here (no jokes, please ) for my bro Ted (that's tripoutski to you guys). I have jammed with him, seen him play live with two different bands, and have listened to mp3 files he's sent me - and the guy is just a great musician with a gifted ear to boot.
He's a killer guitar, bass, and keyboard player, and he can sing like a mothuh too! I just wish I could get my ass moved out to Cali soon so we can get jiggy with it and play like we've talked about for a months now. |

Re: BassThang!Man…have we known each other that long? Sheesh. Hopefully you will only know 1 wife!
Thanks, Wolfie. For a second I even thought you were serious…until I read that part about the keyboards! I am not one of those guys that have it “naturally.” It is a serious love/hate relationship at times. I am 37, and I have been playing a long time, and I think for me I am at a place where simply plugging at it so damn long has paid off in some ways. I received a lot of encouragement from my parents when younger, which kept me going. There was a dozen years or so when I was not actively playing, but I have always had a rule that I keep a guitar close by at all times. Never cased, rusted strings, whatever. That was I always had something around. Anyone that sees a guitar around my house uncased is encouraged to play it, no matter the skill or age of the individual (my 4 year old has friends that come play all the time. I watch them closely, perhaps guiding them slightly towards the Ovation rather than the Les Paul…). Seriously, thanks to all of you with the kind words on this piece. Wish I knew what to do with it! I still welcome anyone to download it and mess with it. I love hearing what others do with my music. I added an MP3 in the original post for those who are connection impaired. Wolf…once your ass is close, we ROCK! |

Re: BassThang!See, now THIS is what I am talking about it! Take it, twist it, whatever!
Cool job, Eric. You did a few things that I loved. You did a palm-muting thing DRY, which was a key for blending in. The bass is not really a bass here; it is kind of like a piano. It is definitely still taking a rhythm roll, but it is also the focus. You did not lose that, and that is an issue that I am playing with. You also did the power chords sparingly, and in the background. I played with them, but I was leaning with an organ (B3) kind of thing. I like what you did there better. Awesome. Thanks. -Trip |

Re: BassThang!Agreed. I like it too. I'm actually thinking about adding a part on top of both of you just to see if I can come up with something that will fit as a third voice.

Re: BassThang! Thanks man, it was a lot of fun to play with. I cranked up the volume on the bass line while I was playing with it to try to get the best sense of timing I could. The power chords are out of tune (good thing it was turned down). It would be really cool to hear that bass line with a drum track
