This guy was responsible for my love of the guitar. This track is from 1974 and is out of contract now. When I heard this for the first time, I couldn't believe how beautiful it sounded. It went way beyond Hendrix, Page, Clapton or Beck for me. It is very English...Be Bop Deluxe were from Wakefield, an industrial town in the North of England yet Bill's lyrics were always quite detatched from his upbringing. While Plant/Page were singing about 'Stairways to Heaven', Bill Nelson was making the stuff around him seem magical and he was fascinated with the future. He was also a reluctant
guitar hero. I remember on a US tour he refused to play a solo spot and someone threw a tear gas cannister on the stage...this was pretty big music news at the time. His reluctance eventually split the band and he went New Wave with Red Noise which I couldn't 'get'. He still writes and plays and was the sole reason I decided to pick a guitar up. This song has standed the test of time and I would find it impossible to label it or put it in a pigeon hole. Hope you like it as much as I do.
Wah.
