Harmonic Minor with a twist

Last week my teacher introduced me to the theory behind the Harmonic minor scale. I had been noodling with it unknowningly for years to show off, but his lesson helped make it gel.

I layed down a heavy backing track with the drum machine last night and started wailing away on a chord progression I came up with. It works with A Harmonic Minor, then changes to A aolian.
I think I'll develop it into a “prog-style” song. That should be fun...

I realize the playing is a bit spotty. I felt like I was “in the zone” earlier that evening, but I was clipping the VU meters all over the place and had to scrap my first takes. Of course when I though I got the recording levels right, the touch was gone... it's just noodling anyway.

Sounds good CC, some of it sounds like it's from india so you are obviously doing it right I liked the backing track too, nice and heavy crunch.

Re: Harmonic Minor with a twist

Thanks, Eric.
I alternate between Harmonic and Aolian. The harmonic minor gives it its “persian” sound, while the aolian is more basic mode.
I started doing it with a different progression at first, where I only played harmonic minor, and became a drone real quick. The mode change makes it more interesting.
I'm still new to all this so I discover as I go.

I'll try to record a better session on the same progression tonight and replace this mp3 in the morning so it sounds more like I know what I'm doing though...

Note: I used a Mesa Recto and a Soldano for the two guitar parts.

CC - sorry it took me so long to post bro. This track has a very good grove on it and I can really feel the middle eastern influence here. Thanks for posting this - it was the only thing that could wake me up this morning.

Desert music! LOL!

Wip, glad this could wake you up.
I didn't get to record last night as I got back from my kid's BMX racing practice very late. We'll give it another shot tonight maybe.
