Operation Solid State: Day 2I'm am trying desperately to get a good sound out of my solid state amp in a recording. This is my first result. Tell me what you think. If you're familiar with Slayer's song Bloodline, you'll recognize this. It's the first 50 seconds.

Re: Operation Solid State: Day 2I have a hard time really hearing your tone, probably because of the low resolution of your recording.
Overall is sounds very crunchy, not bad at all, but as I said, it's hard for me to really make a call on it. |

Re: Operation Solid State: Day 2I agree, it sounds good but I can barely hear it. Can you beef up the volume in the mix?

Re: Operation Solid State: Day 2Thanks for the feedback.
Do you mean the volume of the guitars or the entire mix? |

Re: Operation Solid State: Day 2Done! That's the best I can do without it breaking up, but I think I beefed it up quite a bit.

Re: Operation Solid State: Day 2Much better man, that tune is good and heavy and I think the tone is good and beefy for a solid state amp

Re: Operation Solid State: Day 2Cool beans, thanks man!
That's one sortie in Operation Solid State down. Next step is fixing the acoustics in my room. I distance mic'ed the amp and I think it was a bad idea in the end. The guitar seems to have a way too spacious, roomy sound. |

Try recording your amp inside a closet filled with clothes. That's where a friend of mine recorded an entire accoustic album he produced at home, and the result sounded really pro. Operation Solid State is kicking ass! |

Re: Operation Solid State: Day 2Wow, that's a really good idea! Props to your friend if he thought that one up himself.
While I don't see myself packing a full stack into my closet any time soon, that did give me a few new ideas. |

Re: Operation Solid State: Day 2Since the recording was done as dry as possible, there was no unwanted reverb.
He later added reverb with ProTools, but only what he needed.... Good luck! |

Re: Operation Solid State: Day 2The 2nd version was better beefied!!
I'm only familiar with the older slayer stuff, but you brought a point of recognition. Production: I hear some level of noise (like a tape-deck playing) and at the end it sounds like the mix is a bit clipping. Try to cut away empty parts of tracks to keep the noise as low as possible. You did good rhythms together with the drumm. And a good tone for this music! |

Re: Operation Solid State: Day 2I think the level of noise was because I distance mic'd it. Both guitar tracks came through with what you're hearing. I don't think I pushed the signal above the noise floor. I had my mic preamp cranked pretty hard.
The end of the mix is clipping. That's what happened after I raised the volume of the mix. I think I need to run it through a compressor. Thanks for the input! |

Re: Operation Solid State: Day 2i don't know the song , but man is that heavy ! ,
i'll be perfectly honest with you , when i heard the start i didn't really like your tone (Sorry) .. but when the drums kicked in you were spot on with the timing .. and your sound was huge! .. i was really impressed made me wanna crank my amp up and tune down to drop D ! |

Re: Operation Solid State: Day 2I didn't really like the tone either, which had me very surprised by the positive feedback I got about it, but I tend to be over-critical of my recordings.
Thanks for the compliment about the timing. I double tracked both channels (four guitar tracks) so the timing was a nightmare. Don't be too impressed, though. That huge sound is because of the bass. I hooked my guitar up through a Whammy pedal, dropped it an octave, plugged into a compressor so I wouldn't get that loud crack when I hit the string, then into my computer. I stood there thinking, "Is this really necessary? Do I need to record the fake bass for such a simple track? What difference will it make." So, I cued up my recording and played with it... then I picked my jaw up off the floor and proceeded to record the bass part. |
