So I mic\'d my amp...

Hi there guys,

I managed to mic my amp yesterday. If I could tell you what I did to get it to work, then I would do. But I haven't got a clue !

When I was asking for your help, I forgot to add that I have the most temperamental P.C. ever !!!

So, I use my mates microphone. I plug it into the microphone slot on my P.C. I check the settings in the Sounds and Multimedia part within the Control Panel. Everything looks like it should work. It doesn't.

I then double click on the sound icon in my taskbar and make sure that line in is muted, and microphone is not.

Still I get jack shit...

After a while, I resign myself to the fact that it isn't going to work, and go back through the pedal into the line in socket. Now, I can hear the bloody guitar coming through the P.C. speakers, but I can't record it. Now I'm annoyed because I can't use any method to record.

For some reason, I decide to plug my guitar into the microphone socket to see what happens. Now I can't hear it through the speakers, but the signal is being recorded.

So I plug back into the amp, put the microphone into the socket and mic the amp, and hey presto, it all works.

I have no idea what triggered it, but maybe my computer is just as slow as me.

Anyway, all that said and done, here's what I managed to record. Now, I need you to listen past the fact that I am going straight into the amp without pedals. I also need you to listen past the fact that I can't execute a convincing pick scrape to save my life, and I just need you to answer the following question :

Does my bum look big in this ?

Oh, sorry, I mean :

Does this sound better than going through my pedal ?

Woohoo ! Thank f*** for that !

Seriously though, I have bad hearing, so I truly need help with this sort of stuff...

I will try and further this stuff, and will be asking for further feedback, so please bear with me...

That is, if my computer continues to want to play...

That sounds fine to me dude, you had me tapping the opening drum intro. As far as the slide goes I wouldn't sweat it, a slide is a slide, not much to it.

That may be so, but I just can't seem to implement one correctly.

But thanx for the feedback guys, you don't know how good that sounds ?

Mondola, you sound tighter than spandex on this one, and your tone is tits! Don't you change a thing from now on—you can put the pedal away as it was killing your sound before.

Did you use a metronome or did you play along to the original AC/DC recording as a guide? You are spot on and made me bang my head like a retard at the office!

I agree that your pick scrape stinks like a heap of steaming jockstraps at the end of the football season, but don't let it drag you down.

Overall this is the sound you need to stick to from now on, (unless the wife decides to put a Marshall full stack and an Eventide Harmonizer on the wedding present list of course).

Up the irons, mate!

Re: So I mic\'d my amp...

Nah. No metronome, no original recording...

I have the drum beat of this one imprinted in every blood cell I think. I think my natural frequency actually is this drumbeat...

Thanx for the comment. I think maybe it might be the picks I am using, but I suspect I'm just shite at the pick scrapes, which pisses me off no end !

Re: So I mic\'d my amp...

Try moving your pick slowly on the low E string, from the neck pickup toward the nut.
Going fast always sounds like dung.
Try it, and tell us if it's better.
You may also want to experiment with the angle of the pick and the pressure applied to the strings.

Here's info on how do do a pick slide. It's pretty accurate except for the part about how fast you want to move the pick.
Go to the bottom of the page for the pick slide section.

Slides are present in many songs, so you should use them often. It is one of the easiest techniques to master.

Re: So I mic\'d my amp...

Mondola,

I listened to this one and compared it with the sound you used to record and there's a huge difference in the positive way!!

The pick scratch made me laugh a bit. It was just so funny, I couldn't help. I remember me pickscratch in the past and consumed some plectrums (well, you got those little holes on the side, like a little mouse has eaten your plectrum). That has to do with the pressure.

But experiment some with it like CanyonCarver said and this technique will be yours within no-time!!

Re: So I mic\'d my amp...

I used to suck at pickscrapes too ... a good thing that really helped me was to just make sure you stay on the bottom E string and push down really hard .. and make sure you use a pretty heavy pick .. try doing it with a 20 cent oh well i guess you don't have 20 cent australian coins :P

well a thick coin anyway i guarentee you'll be able to do em much easier. . go as far as you can each time .. as in towards the head

still a rockin tone though
