How to make bootlegs?

I'm going to an album launch party in September and wanted to make a recording of it but don't know how. On this site I've heard some fantastic audience bootlegs and some absolutely dire attempts by people. I don't want to spend TOO much money so they won't be fantastic but what would I need to use and spend for it to sound okay? Because I don't want it to sound like some of the sh*t I've heard in here either... Any ideas? Video Cameras are out of the question, needs to be a small hand held devive.
