Early Ed copies

Just finished this little beast. The wood is hard ash the sound is clear and snapy with a full sharp bite. It is basically the exact guitar from VH1 album cover (minus the paint job). Note the brass bridge with the "tear-drop" saddles. -the bridge is 25 years old, and it was on my first Ed copy guitar back in early 79 (check out next photo).

Re: Early Ed copies

I think I was 15 when I had some guy in Saratoga CA named Dan Torres build and paint this guitar for me back in late 1978. Of course I destroyed this guitar over the years. Note the Phase 90, MXR Flange, the Echoplex and shag carpet! -still have the MXR.

I had an Explorer built from ash and I found it VERY top-end...fedback like a hound of hades...looks lovely tho; how does the trem stay true without a locking nut?

There should be a full thread on how to keep vintage trems in tune. For me I just tune up the guitar whilst using the trem in between. Its when I bend the strings with my hand that the strings go flat, but just a quick little whap on the bar and the strings are back perfectly. I keep the bridge fermly pulled back onto the body wood. Its a little harder to suppress the bar, but that keeps me from over using it. I just adore the sound of these vintage (six hole) bridges so I'm willing to take on the extra fuss w/out the floyed set up.

Nice looking guitar. Going a bit off topic, hows your finger going?

Re: Early Ed copies

Hey, thanks for remembering! The finger has heald up and moves as good as new, but has little feeling in it. I can play like the wind , but find it hard to do bends. It will take a year for the nerve to grow back...i hope

How are the brass saddles compared to steel ones?

Great pics strat78!!! I especially DIG the second pic with that carpet too!

BTW I also remember seeing those "wedge" shaped pedals back in the daze... was that a Maestro volume pedal or is that from another manufacturer?

Yes, welcome to the board!!! For those of you who do not know epi, check out http://www9.ocn.ne.jp/~evinda/english.html
Monday I'll give this guitar a good spin around the block. I've been using that brass bridge from my teenage years, but I have a feeling that in the end it will make the sound a little too bright together with the hard ash body. However, I have been more of a fan of the VH1 sound than the other so called brown sound albums. It really seems to nail that "Aint talkn' 'bout love" tone. -especially that first riff and the open G chord. As much as I adore the brass bridge, I'll give the old nickle pressed sadles w/steel block, a chance to shine on this ax at the end of the week.
