If you really want to get this wicked riff down, its the echo that drives this simple rhythm forward. Set the echo so that it sounds that second (A minor) chord. Hit the open A string twice slightly muffled as the chord echo's back. As far as I'm concerned this song is a total dud if the guitar is not played this way. Any thoughts on this?

Only in the first few weeks of the first tour (1978) did Ed play this song accurately, after that he got really lazy.

I always have a slight delay when most Van Halen stuff, so I would tend to agree. I feel that I can stil do the riff justice without it though.

Thats how I do it, I've never seen a cover band do justice to that song. Most guitarists tend to butcher that riff.
