Re: Basic 2...Diatonic modes
if you are playing the Ionain in the 5th position then the Dorian would start in the 7th and Phrygian would start in the 9th and so on.

Re: Basic 2...Diatonic modes
Every major has its natural minor, this is the 6th note of the scale
A = F#
B = G#
C = A
D = B
E = C#
F = D
G = E
so if you are playing G-C-D-Emin (typical Maiden)
you can play diatonically
E Aeolian
B Phrygian
A Dorian

Re: Basic 2...Diatonic modes
Modes rule!
Learn the patterns all over the neck, play to backing tracks and you'll have loads of shredding fun. Eventually, also find common finger patterns to help you play runs all along the neck in one mode. Get yourself a polka dotted Jackson V and... like Randy Rhoads!

Re: Basic 2...Diatonic modes
Its good to see people teaching people about music rather then licks to copy. Good job showing all of the basic modes with the same root note. I also think you should demonstrate the relation between all of them in a given key, how they naturally occur. Lets use the key C major. C ionian IS C major. The notes of C major are C D E F G A B (no sharps or flats). Naturally occuring in this order is the modes in the key of C major: D dorian, E phrygian, F lydian, G mixolydian, A aeolian (natural minor), and B locrian. Once someone realizes that a major or minor scale contains all of the modes, they'll realize what people mean when they say "you already play the modes". So say theres a simple chord progression: C major7, F major7, D minor7, and G 7 all looped. Well C ionian fits the 1st chord, F lydian fits the 2nd, D dorian fits the 3rd, and G mixolydian fits the 4th chord.

Re: Basic 2...Diatonic modes
Okay, piecing both tony's and brainpolice's posts together, I think I might understand. I will post my understandings when I get home, and you can then tell me if I have got the right end of the stick...

Re: Basic 2...Diatonic modes
Ah, ok, I think I get the theory on this now. So if I'm playing in the key of C, like you say, the notes go
C D E F G A B
and chords would be :
C major, D minor, E minor, F major, G major, A minor, B diminished
And so the corresponding modes for these chords would be :
C IONIAN (major) starting at the eigth fret
DORIAN(minor) starting at the 10th fret
PHRYGIAN(minor) starting at the open or 12th fret
LYDIAN(major) starting at the first fret
MIXOLYDIAN(minor) starting at the 3rd fret
AEOLIAN(minor) starting at the fifth fret
LOCRIAN(diminished) starting at the 7th fret
Is my understanding correct ?
