Re: Eruption tapping explanation

Hi wah,

Try as I might, I can't dampen the b string when I tap my g string (stop giggling)...

I tap with my index finger and have my middle finger dampen it, but it naturally wants to get out of the way of my tapping index finger...

Do you use some other technique to dampen it ? Or do I just need to practise until I can keep the little bugger on that string ???

Re: Eruption tapping explanation

Ed does the entire tapping part on the B string only. He also cradles the neck with his thumb, 4th and 3rd (sometimes middle too) fingers when he is tapping. It creates more feel and finess that way and after you work with it for a while it's not too hard. Otherwise it sounds like jabbing or poking.

Re: Eruption tapping explanation

You could try it on the B but I don't think thats gonna solve your problem...only practise and slowly, slowly will do that. To try on the B is simple maths....subtract 4 from the fret positions on the G and move it across. Therefore, if you are on 6, 9, 13 on the G, start it on 2, 5, 9 on the B string and carry on from there.

Re: Eruption tapping explanation

Heh, I figured that one out already...

I'm getting there... slowly....

Thanx for the help. I am doing it all on the B string as it feels more natural to me...

Good point wah. I remember having the same problem with other strings ringing but over time you will have better control over it and that will go away, keep plugging away at it

Re: Eruption tapping explanation

you dont have to hold the neck, i tap with just the middle finger and it sounds great. I think vai uses his middle also and theres nothing that man does that sounds bad.

Re: Eruption tapping explanation

Nobody's told him he had to EddieMan, I just was describing how Eddie does it, Everyone has their own way. Besides, Vai is a rifle and even though he's a great player he doesn't have near the finess Ed does
