eddie does a lot of butterfly type picking its like a jazz scale like the solo off of so this is love
could some one make a mp3 of how these licks are played and how they are used in a solo and some of ed's fast picking stuff like in im the one
thanks
Why don't you post an mp3 of you playing what you are talking about and we will tell you if you are on the right track. Or why not just watch the man himself? Watch when they finally cut to Ed playing the solo, he is doing that "fanning" picking technique (is that what you mean by butterfly picking?).
note: once again if you go to youtube and type in Van Halen, you get all these pajama clad guys in their moms basement massacring VH songs, the horror!
Great video!! It's so nice to see Van Halen in their glory days again and to see David Lee Roth with hair. lol Was that Jack Daniels he and Michael Anthony were drinking on stage??
Strat- Great stuff from the king of VH Knowledge himself!
I would like to make two comments here (and I dont know if anyone will agree but its MHO)
1) If you read/watch the Fender Video about the Frankie and Chip Ellis or whatever that guy who did the repro-job said about the Frankie neck, he said "if you watch Ed play, hes really mangling (something along the lines of he is reallly beating the crap out of the neck while he is playing) the neck, strangling it" or to that effect. Now watch this video. Is it me or does Ed not have some of the most economical, fluid flow to his playing? I disagree with the "strangling" statement. The notes/sound is aggressive, but Ed is pretty fluid and smooth when it comes to moving around on the fretboard.
2) I liked the part where Ed and Al were just doing their own little thing (Ed's doing a little "Women In Love" intro-lick type riffing) and Dave and Mike were just hanging out, like "WTF?" kinda look. Its all about family! Say what you want about VH, the brothers have always stuck together and for that I respect them. "Ma familia es Numero Uno" or "Never take sides against the family" are words to live by.
Anyway, this is a great version of THE song that made me the coolest kid on the block because my dad gave me his copy of VH II and all the kids thought that SGMAD was the best song on VH II. For some reason, I digressed and always liked "DOA" the best on this one, with the feedback, the tremolo picking in the solo, the great bends in the solo and the dive bomb at the end. I always wished that VH II was recorded with the tone from VH I....it would have been their best record (and if Down in Flames replaced YNG).

Ive always read about Ed wanting to make guitar playing as easy as possible - things like tuning down a half step, seeking/building guitars with smooth low action and precise frets, variac'ing his old plexi to saturate more distortion etc.
I also read a few times that Ed uses his middle finger to hold the pick instead of the index finger. Might help him craft some unique ways of striking harmonics etc.
His attack on the guitar seems really varied IMO..sometimes attacking very agressively and hard and other times delicately tapping, finger picking or sliding his left hand around without any right hand, playing around with the volume knob etc etc... being able to go from a light touch to heavy touch. It's all about accenting the playing and Ed is fantastic in doing this - being the only guitarist in the band, growing up playing closely to his drummer brother and covering so many songs in their early career, he really mastered bouncing between rhythm and solo's... Jimmy Hendrix had that too and again probably influenced greatly by his former early bands reportoire and dynamic.

yeah i hear some of ed's licks what is that there playing like a jazz scale i notiched its the index and second and pinky finger so what is the notes because its sound like the same like just differnt frets i call it butterfly picking .

Yes! Holding the pick with his middle finger MOST of the time (He does play with the pick held in the traditional way if you watch his videos or pictures closely). A good example of how Ed holds the pick showing up in the harmonics or sound would be the harmonics in the break in Panama (the one he does right before the first verse and then again before the choruses....most tabs show this as being done on either the 5th fret harmonics on the High E and B strings but its actually played on the 9th fret harmonics on the B and G strings) and also the rhythm and false harmonics in "ATBL" ....the angle of his hand lends itself to a different attack on the strings and enables a mufflng/muting that is difficult to reproduce otherwise.

Not to be a jerk, (The ole caveat forewarns you that I am going to be one) but what the hell are you talking about?
You have said the same thing over and over and Im not sure that anyone doesn't want to help you, they just dont know what you need help with.
You say the solo to "So This is Love", ok, what part? Why dont you take the CD, find the lick that you're refering to and then post it here vis-a-vis "THe part that Ed does in the solo from 2:12 to 2:17" or something like that. It would definitely help us help you alot more than "I call it 'butterfly picking'" when no one knows what you're refering to.
