I\'m the one - Part 1 - Intro
Here's the intro I tabbed out to I'm the one. I'll try to tab out the rest of the tune as i get time to do it. Since I am still learning my tab program, excuse the 1/16th note sextuplets showing as groups of 1/16th note triplets. Regardless, they are the same as each other.
The most important thing is to observe the picking technique, otherwise, it will be impossible to play. The notes on the D string are always played with an up stroke.
The exercise is played twice with two different endings. First the flury of hammer ons(some are picked) and pull offs then the second time, the picked harmonics.
Enjoy!

No problem. It's funny I learned this when I first started playing and I learned it completely wrong. From the way I learned it, it seemed impossible to play it properly up to speed. Lately I have been concentrating on really picking apart the notes and the possible locations of them. It's amazing how once you learn the correct way, how much easier it actually is to play it. Hey Mr. Crumb, nice job. If I might add, the first fill in the opening (the part that you say has to be started with up strokes) actually starts at the end of the previous measure. There are 4 pick up notes right before your section #1. I'll try to tab it here. The part before the vertical line is what I think is missing, the part after the vertical is your tab from section #1.

Thanks Mr.Crumb. Just trying to help. I've gotten so much from others on this forum in just a few days since I've joined, it's the least I could do.

Re: I\'m the one - Part 1 - Intro
What makes that second section so completely bad ass is that Ed slightly muffles some of the notes while actually pinging the down stroked notes at the same time. Sure this is not a very difficult pattern to play, but when it is executed with the Ed touch its like a flame thrower!

Heh... And the best part is that he does that without thinking about it

Re: I\'m the one - Part 1 - Intro
Yeah, so true! I don't care if people "musicians" are sick of hearing about EVH, because as far as I'm concerned nothing has really been said yet.
Hey, on the second album there is that song "outa love again" which is similiar in structure to I'm the One". This tune gets very little attention even though its one of the most interestingly arranged and executed rock songs ever. I feel it was the band at there best. Roth is in a rare deadly form, Anothy is keeping it big and simple, alex is flying yet solid and Ed is playing with such hair trigger restraint that the whole song feels like its gona' explode. That second solo brake is truly miraculous! There is no sense in tabbing it out because its all finess.

i love that song ! ...
ed does some unbelievably sweet rhythmic soloing ... in my opinion one of the most underated ed solos ever

That is so true! That quick little muffled riff in the middle of that second solo is absolutely wicked! The end of that solo has what i can only describe as a perfect dismount too: like Nadia Comaneci used to do.

If you go to www.learntoburn.com Curt Mitchell has this intro tabbed out with a video of him playing it so you can get the technique down. Click on Guitar 101 at the site.

He's got the harmonics wrong
Maybe we should have tabbed it out here for him

Curt Mitchell's got the whole riff completely wrong... he's not tuned to the right key, he's not playing the beginning riff at all the way Ed does it. It not the right approach to the muffled, harmonic picking pulloffs before the riff repeats either... and as you say the harmonics are way off.
He seems to be the kind of player who settles for "close enough" but it doesn't work with Ed's material- it just sounds amateurish played that way. And the tone sounds NOTHING like Ed's.
Basically I never was into Curt Mitchell or that whole video lesson by unknown players crap. I liked the series with the actual players (i.e. Lynch, Gilbert, Yngwie, Reb Beach, E. Johnson etc.).
