is it important to be able to read notes and all the funny kind of symbols and stuff? i have totally zero knowledge of it, don't know if that will put me in a disadvantageous position when it comes to learning guitar. anybody know of any sites that offer lessons on theory? I'd say learn tab (even tho I don't know it meself)...at least you'll be learning a guitar 'language' rather than music theory. Try Google is all I can suggest.
Uh. Why NOT learn music theory. Its just the language to say what you dont yet know you can say. LOL. If you wanna learn theory, try on your own first. Try getting good books. I would suggest anything released by the berklee press (because berklee is the #1 music school in america).
i think you should learn what you feel comfortable with ... my music teacher once said somethign to me that stuck with me .. he said "music is a language , just like english you should be able to read and write it just like english"
but i think you do what is comfortable with yourself . guitar especially i think there are mountains of ways to play and do it very well without learning mountains of theory .. i agree with wah learn some tab first
i agree, what makes difference if ya know the terms, all that matters is ya play them just have fun thats what its about.. worry about that stuff when ya get in a slump or somethin
But once you would learn the theory...you'll have mountains of new things to play. And mountains of different ways to compose music. Its more of a compositional aid then anything else. In the long run, it DOES show in one's playing though.
i think it does and i do agree with you .. i just think when your first learning you need to take things real slow ... learn stuff you wanna learn that are quick and easy to keep you interested which is where i think tab is good .. unless your really interested music theory can be very daunting .. i think learn some things first and then start on the theory to further what you already know
You're right though stiglar. Starting small is where it's at. I'm not saying anyone should dive into the stuff. But getting a good basic foundation in theory, seems to be something lots of guitarists are...well...scared of. I think people should educate themselves at least a LITTLE bit. The circle/cycle of 5ths/4ths and scales is only the very beginning; and people are scared to learn about that as it is.

I agree, you can't break the rules until you learn them.
i am taught in music theory and where i believe it can help i also believe it can hinder, i sometimes find it hard to be spontaneous because i play in the patterns and shapes that you get to know over the fretboard, now if i didnt know that and could just use my ears that would be cool too. but knowing theory is something i would definately not change
