silly question : How to tap with right hand
I#ve read alot about right hand tapping in this forum, but I am not able to pick it up. Basicly I understand the idea behind, but whenever I try it, it sounds like shit. I've tried with several axes, thinner strings, bigger strings, humbucker, singlecoils - the result is always the same, it sounds worse.
As far as I understood tapping, the index or middle finger of the right hand will hammer on the string in it's entire position from the used scale. What should I use to do this? fingertip, nail or plec? - and how to avoid this f+++++g timing prob..
What would be better? high frets, low frets, scalloped fretboard?
Your comments are highly appreciated

Re: silly question : How to tap with right hand
Practice, practice, and more practice. When I tap with my right, I slip my pick into the crook of my middle finger and use my index finger. Quick, sharp taps are what you need to accomplish. Don't let your finger wonder or the string won't ring true. Practice, practice, practice. It will come eventually. Did I say "practice"?

Re: silly question : How to tap with right hand
it took me ages to adjust my style to tuck my pick away in my hand instead of just shoving it in my mouth or dropping it lol . make sure you don't do that cause it makes casual tapping a bitch !

Re: silly question : How to tap with right hand
I cup my pick the same way you guys described only I don't jab at the string, I cradle the neck with my thumb and last two fingers, more control over position and better dynamically for me that way. If I have to do them extremely fast or double tap then I jab.

I do the exact same thing. I have no clue how i do it so quickly, it's not even a purpoiseful thing..the pick jsut ends upin the crook of my middle finger. I think you just need your finger to have a strong grasp on the fret, and it should be fine. Ive been tapping for a while. One thing I noticed a lot of people dont seem to realize...you have 4 fingers on your right hand to tap with; USE THEM! The first step is usually learning to tap with index, but after a while that gets very bland, in my opnion at least. I try to add in my middle and ring fingers (pinky's still pretty weak for taps). Another thing i think some people overlook is; Half of what goes on in tapping involves the left hand's work as well. The more fingers from your left hand that you're using in conjunction with your right hand, the more notes you can hit, and the more complex your taps are going to be. Getting patterns down on 1 string is a good place to start, but beyond that; i think learning to tap up and down all 6 is another mountain to climb.

Re: silly question : How to tap with right hand
Just tap with your middle finger. Its more convenient.
Plus, you get to flip people the bird while playing

Re: silly question : How to tap with right hand
as well as doing everything thats allready been said, i also use the tip of my pick to tap instead of using fingers sometimes, just gives it a different sound maybe like theres alittle more goin on then what actually is, i dunno i like doin it anyways.. just practice at it, it will come to you when you least expect it..

Re: silly question : How to tap with right hand
oh and another sugeestion for startin out, if your just gonna tap on 1 string.. use your thumb and ring finger to bend the strings you wont be tapping out of the way, that might help with getting rid of some of the extra noise your gettin by accidently hitting those strings while your tapping
