Steve Vai\'s 30 Hour Workout
Mr. Vai revised his old 10 hour workout into a 30 hour one! Very interesting and helpful exercises in there! It's in the April issue with Joe Perry and Jimmy Page on the cover.

Re: Steve Vai\'s 30 Hour Workout
I've got that issue, and really Vai excels on it. You can also download the samples and exercices he uses in this workout, you just have to go to the site of guitarworld and get them

Re: Steve Vai\'s 30 Hour Workout
No one should do "workouts" unless they are a jock or want to cheet on their wives. Are we talking good old guitar playin' here or what?.

Re: Steve Vai\'s 30 Hour Workout
you do "workouts" if you want your playing/technique/understanding of the instrument to get better . theres no way i would've learnt how to play jazz (half assed mind you) if i hadn't sat down and done some "workouts" scales etc and understood how they work

Re: Steve Vai\'s 30 Hour Workout
Well all of this stuff is just fine but I think what strat's point might have been is - why base your playing off of instructionals thats other people release. Why not develope your own style. The more things like this someone soaks up, the more they are gonna be stuck playing a certain way. Why dont you create workouts for yourself, rather then aspiring to copy someone else's style.
From checking out that link - those are some cool things to practise. But i must say that any of us could create things like that for ourselves without someone else. Yea, Steve Vai is an amazing player. But i dont think anyone is gonna become an amazing player by learning someone else's licks.

Re: Steve Vai\'s 30 Hour Workout
These are excersizes BP, people like learning from it and not every person is an innovater. So what's wrong with woking out with this stuff? Jesus dude, every fucking topic that comes up you jump in and rip on. You need to lighen up and stop causing shit in everyone's threads. If you have something valuable to add then you are more than welcome but otherwise, back off.

Yet what i add is valueable. People learning other people's licks doesnt make you any better. I find it stupid and it makes everyone play the same licks. Its why all the shredders sound the same.

Re: Steve Vai\'s 30 Hour Workout
No, what you added is arrogant and elitist, attempting to make yourself sound like you know more than everyone else. What is your problem with people wanting to practice excersizes? I suppose you think lessons aren't going to help anyone get better either. Dude, give up acting like you are so great at everything

Re: Steve Vai\'s 30 Hour Workout
Eric, slow down buddy. No disrespect, but at least give BP a chance to enlighten us with his wisdom.
BP, I went to check out some of your audio, but fuck me, you don't have any. Please post some links to your audio so we can hear what your playing style is like and compare its content of originality. Nothing speaks "enlightenment" like your own original playing.
And do us all the favor: Don't take a long time working on that one lick you think will dazzle us all into submission. Just post what you got.

Re: Steve Vai\'s 30 Hour Workout
And I thought Vai's excercise was great, but the reason I don't write my own, and why I read through Vai's as I was taking a shit rather than playing my guitar, is because I enjoy the read and don't have the attention any other time to do more than that.

Re: Steve Vai\'s 30 Hour Workout
i would probably find it easier to write my own . but i think now and then it can be awesome to play someone elses licks . it can open up new ideas in your own playing . if you hear something you like . you can change it somewhat and use it in your own playing . its all part of the grand scheme of things . i wouldnt sit n learn other peoples songs . but a big workout might be a good idea . after all the point of a workout surely is to build up strength and stamina and speed etc etc so yeah nothing wrong with doing a workout someone else has written . especially when its vai . yay 4 vai
