Oasis songs are usually pretty easy, or Bon Jovi. Of course, I'm not talking about the exact transcription here. If you can get the tab of just some chords and then strum along, it will be a huge confidence boost.

Try www.drycounty.com (I remember it had several popups though) for some cool Bon Jovi guitar tab. Someday I'll Be Saturday night is relatively easy to strum along to. I've posted Someday I'll Be Saturday Night here though, to spare you the pop ups, although the chords won't line up along the top of the words, which is annoying. Anyway, it's on the Crossroads album on the site...

Greenday is the epitome of what a first song should be! Go for songs like Brain Stew and things like that. Dead simple. God i wish all songs were like that! My first proper song i learnt was Paranoid by Sabbath so that may be a good one. The main thing is that you learn songs you like, as its not much fun and is much harder learning songs you dont like so much!

Good luck!

Towlie, that's exactly what I was going to add as an after thought. You have to like the song and at least be able to figure out what it sounds like in your head. Or, have the song in front of you, playing away so you can figure out what you are supposed to sound like.

And remember, practise makes perfect. Over and over agin.

I remember learning Mr. Big's To Be With You, and it sounded like shite at first, but eventually, it all comes together.

How about 'Sweet Home Alabama'? D C and fuggin' G ad infinitum with some pentatonice blues scales in the key of D (10th fret) and some nice D major interspersed thruout.

Shit, hold on. Knocking On Heaven's Door. That's always a good one !!! G D and C with the odd A minor thrown in for good measure !!!

We used to bang this out at University all the time and just noodle around for AGES at the end of it, getting more and more high...

AC/DC. Nothing more to say. Literally two or three chords throughout some songs.

Exactly what I was gonna say El Jalepeno. Try the
"Back In Black" album from AC/DC. You can't go wrong there!

Re: Taking suggestions on first song. Looking for something easy.

actually I taught him a bunch of scales and techniques, tapping, alternate and tremolo picking etc. and eruption tended to put everything together.

Once he learns that most a lot of other songs should become easy
