The Song Remains The Same liveI was wondering if you can tell me what tuning Jimmy Page uses for The Song Remains The Same live. In tabaltures available on the internet it looks like he using alternate tuning but from the film it looks like it is regular tuning on his EDS 1275 . Please advise.

Not sure off the top of my head to be honest I always assumed most of Zep's stuff including The song remains the same was in a sense standard tuning however this song from all the footage and dvd's I have is played on a twelve string and unless the same principal of being in "standard" tuning applies for a twelve string then it probably is. I would try it in regular tuning first, I doubt its in alternative tuning although songs like the rain song are an example of weird tunings he'd use. To bad they didn't put it on the offical dvd , I love my earls court disc because they actually put Song Remains The Same on there.

I used to play that song in a cover band (many moons ago) and I played it in standard tuning (we did the live version).

I am sure it is in standard tuning. It is played on a 12-string in standard tuning, while the rain song is in 6-string in some weird tuning

Thank you for your input. I think it is regular tuning but I wonder about this first chord Jimmy is using after the intro. It sounds so good on 12 strong and it must something different than chord dericing from simple A major with F# /E on top of that.

about TSRS tuningsHi guys try this one for starters. As many of you know, Page was a great advocte of open and modal tunings for both his acoustic and electric work. For TSRS, Page used a modal tuning which was E, A, D A D, E bottom to top.
The studio version was played in standard tuning with the bridge part doubled with the modal tuning....crafty to say the least! As for the rainsong, it was also played in the modal A tuning at Madison Square and the first chord is simply played at the seventh fret ( third finger 2nd string 7th and second finger fourth string seventh. The second chored is the same shape played at the 6th. For the Rain song studio version Page played in the G modal tuning which is the same as the above mentioned (DGCGCD) bottom to top for one guitar and the acoustic is in standard tuning. By the way...you probaly realise that tuning the high b string up 1 tone and a half puts even greater tension on the guitar. You can play both tunes using the g modal and put a capo on the second fret if you think it sounds better enharmonically in A. personally the choice of A major on the live album was simply divine intervention, Enjoy Zeppers!!
