Any golfers in here?

Hey all,

I've been thinking of taking up golf lately, but the problem is, I know absolutely nothing about it. But, I dunno, as I get older, I find the idea of whacking little balls across a field oddly appealing...


Does anyone have any tidbits for someone like me (i.e. how much can I expect to pay for things like equipment and lessons?, should I take lessons? any important rules I should know about before I make myself look like a complete arse on the course? is golf hard to learn?

Oh and lets say I'm the only one of my friends interested in golf, is it hard to simply show up at a course and find a golfing partner?
