Seriously though...I like Hip Hop...more the old skool stuff... NWA, PE, De La Soul, etc...

But the stuff they do these days that gets so much airplay...The formula is simple...rap some shit about how much money and beeyatches you got...then insert some 60s or 70s sample but I dont mean like steal a liuttle bit and twist it...I mean STEAL THE WHOLE DAMN CHORUS AND JUST PLAY IT RIGHT OUT till your next shitty rap verse....then repeat til fade. That takes no skill at all...

Then make a video, add some mo' of yo' beeyatches and a couple of ducatis, and you got yourself a hit.

Yeah, some old school stuff was awesome, personally, I liked the Geto Boys.

And, yeah, your absolutely right, the forumla is so damn simple, yet people still buy this crap over and over.

Oh that reminds me, I was at the mall the other day, and I hear America's "Ventura Highway" coming on the radio, I'm like "Dude, this is the coolest store ever!!" However, my surpise quickly turned to horror when I realized that some brilliant "artist" decided it would be a good idea to desecrate this classic by using the tune as the rhythm to their hip hip song. The hiphop "artist" wasn't even in tune with the backing wtf??? I demand vengeance.

It's not like back in the day when guy's had a message, wether it had a positive light or not. Guys like NWA were rapping about killing, drug dealing, cops on the take and stuff because it was reality. I know it was a reality to me growing up, and still is in a way.

With commercial rap all you get is this fantasy shit, and kids see it and want all the money, girls and power. They don't realize that you have to bust your ass to get it. Instead they sell their souls to record execs and managers. Same goes for the current rock and pop scene.

Basically if I'm gonna rock the music, I've got to be able to feel the message coming across. I feel VH because it's about chicks, fast cars, and shit that appeals to me. That I can deal with. I don't know what it's like to have a bunch of half naked women dancing around me as I smoke a stogie and a yacht, so that's why I can't feel Jay-Z.

Can ya dig it?
I see rap and hip hop as the modern equivalent of the blues. Now I'm not talking about the stuff you see on mtv or hear on most radio stations, but the "real" stuff, groups like sucka mentioned. Think about it, the blues started out as field calls and turned into a way to vent pain and fustrations. The same thing rap and hip hop does now, using a musical form to vent the pain and point out the social injustices.

Rappers only seem to sing about Cops beating them up . jeez if i heard somebody rapping i would beat him up ! .Gotta be the lowest form of performing , Thing is young people think its clever to drive around blasting out this pimp crack shite . It is a form loved by Blacks for some reason , Hendrix would turn in his grave .

I'm sick of rap groups referred to as "Bands". WTF??
(No instruments being played = no band!!!)

Unless someone grows up in the ghetto or south central LA, and is a minority gang member, then how the f*ck can they identify with this crap?

If young media advertising executives didn't shove hip-hop down everyone's throats all the time, It would have been dead a long time ago. There's nothing musical about it..and most of the time they sample or steal tracks from popular rock songs to legitamize their own crap! I just don't get it.
i agree 100%. as a fellow guitar player and professional musician i absolutely hate it. it has ruined most of the live music scene. most of the bands in my area are gone and the dj's are everywhere the bands used to be. some of the clubs put in a dj system and stopped having bands altogether. riff addict and a few veteran players here remember that when we were younger we played for dorm and frat parties, dances and there were a lot of college bars and a few college bands. today college kids listen to some bozo with his computer known as a dj (who is not a musician either) and what is he playing? there aren't any college bands left and when one tries to start up they have no place to play. there are a lot of young promising guitar players on this site and the way i see it as long as there is hip hop and rap they will never be in a band or be heard anywhere but here or somewhere on the net.. a lot of talent will be wasted. i love when these rappers claim to be gang leaders and ask us not to steal their music. bring back guitars and vocalists too

I can handle hip hop althoguh once upon a time i couldn't .. the stuff on the radio is pretty crappy , but the real stuff is pretty cool stuff .. like sucka i think said , the producers and people in the studio become like musicians .. whne you see it being put together you realise how creative some of these songs really are .

I think i said in another thread somewhere , Gangstas talking about their beyotches and taking drugs and guns . . it was quite similar in the 80's the whole pop metal/rock genre was all about being tough and rootin' chicks ! Things don't really change for pop icons these days there will always be subjects like that in pop music i imagine.

As for alot of the bands being replaced by dj's .. alot of the blame has to go to the venue owners .. it's much cheaper to just hire a dj rather than a band , and less hassle for them to worry about . quite sad really !

I like the old school rap like grandmaster flash, jurassic five, most stuff with either ice cube or dr.dre in it... And some other stuff.
But I'm really sick of this new brainless bling bling rap that's invading mtv at the moment. 50 cent and the likes.

Also I don't think it matters wether the music is hard to create or if the ones making it are trained musicians. As long as it sounds good, I'm happy!

As much as most don't like it they are on top of the music business right now. I don't have too many problems with the music itself, some of it does get repetitive however to people who don't play guitar I am sure someone like via or satch would get repititious to them. It just isn't what pleases their ears. My wife was listening to Missy Elliot the other day and the changes in that song were just crazy and the beats were right on. The way some of the lyrics are rhymed seems to me to be pretty ingenious. As much as we might not like it they are still talented in their own rights. Some of them i say NO...but there are talented hip hop artist out there and they are just doing music in a different style then most of us biased guitarist would like to see.

Actually, if you look at those RIAA figures I posted back on page 1, rock has been on top of the business for the last 10 years by at least a 2 to 1 margin.

As far as rap being the next blues, yeah, its very interesting that music pretty much began ended with the black culture. Jesus, the blues and rock are their birthright, why the hell they would want to spit on it and flush it down the toilet by taking up mainstream rap is beyond me.

I dunno Uln I mean I see the stats there but Rap and Hip hop...then R & B I mean the line there is quite thin when you look at all of those types of music. when you combine those rock is not as "dominate" as we think it is or rather how they think it is. I mean R Kelly is considered R & B yet his music sounds like music considered as Rap. I think a better estimate is drawn when the two categories on that RIAA are combined. IMO

I like some rap songs. Very few though - I just don't listen to it because I play guitar. And there is no guitar if any that even possibly interests my ears at all in rap and hip hop music.

The hip hop and rap people should be proud. That "lifestyle" or that "Urban" type music thing is now Global. Yes Irene, there are kids over in (Insert your own Country thats on the other side of the globe from you) Afghanistan right this very moment rappin' out to an LL Cool J tune, or a 50 cent tune.

Well it's seemingly agreed from all that commercial hip-hop just plain sucks which is actually what I meant to begin with... I'm just soooo sick of it being thrown in my face..but I am also against anything gangster rap or anything that promotes violence, abuse of women, and killing cops, etc. There's no need for that kinda junk. I have no respect for anyone living that lifestyle. So what if they had a bad time growing up...get over it and make something positive of your life.

A few of you hate it as much as me so I'm not alone. I don't even like rap-metal so I doubt theres any form of rap/hip-hop that I would deem the "good stuff". Old school commercial rap to me is the worst of all. I remember when rap and rock started mixing like Aerosmith/RunDMC & Anthrax tried the rap thing and I just hated that period.

I respect everyone's opinions and points well taken but I want no part of it. I hope we don't have to change the name of the forum to Hip-Hop 101?
