Battle for New Orleans
I hop on the internet to CNNs web site to catch up with the morning's events, and I see this headline spashed across my screen, "BATTLE FOR NEW ORLEANS".
There was an explosion at the train yard, the mayor "blasts feds:"Get off your asses!" Houston Astrodome is turning away refugees, and some people beleive there are literally thousands of dead bodies lying around and being pushed to the side by the living. Snipers keeping people from going into hospitals!
What the hell is this?!? Sensationalism or reality? I can't even begin to understand what the mentality is down there. Bush says the responses of the feds is unacceptable; The people are starving because food is not coming in; Rescue workers had to stop their efforts becuase of gun fire....
This is just really fucked up. And how in the hell could a "Battle" be taking place for a city??? This isn't Iraq or some other country where people don't have the freedoms that we have here in the states and they are fighting for liberations! These arwe common street thugs, and it's making the news in a big way becuase the government can't keep the situation controlled. I just don't get it...

It's heartbreaking, horrific, and just plain ignorant at the same time.
Not trying to start a debate, but some of it must be caused by
the accessibility of firearms in the States.

None taken. I tend to agree with you on that.

It's really hard to see and, quite honestly, the whole situation just rips my heart in two.

Yeah - I am in a complete state of shock over this whole thing. Things seem to have gotten WAY OUT OF HAND for some reason. There are a couple of things that I do try to keep in mind though as I read / watch the news concerning this subject.
1) The news media's philosophy is "If it bleeds, it leads." IE - the top stories are going to be the ones that involve the most violence or most disturbing content. You won't hear much about anything good that is going on.
2) The presses liberal slant is going to ensure that the Bush Administration looks as bad as humanly possible. Even at the expense of fair and honest reporting practices. (See note 1 above.....)

Yep, this is fact.
What gets me is all the Political Correctness, man, if those people are shooting, then to hell with 'em, kill 'em on site. No need to put up with that crap, anyone looting or raping, they are shot on site.

Last night I heard that troops have been deployed with "shoot to kill" orders, but for what I am not sure. Probably only in situations where lives are at stake. The thing with any disaster is that it brings out the best and the worst in people. Those who are natively inclined to do good things will do good things. Conversly, those natively inclined to do bad things will have a hay day. It definitely should not be tolerated. I havent heard the term "marshall law" used yet - I wonder if that has been considered for the New Orleans area????

Marshal law should have been declared for New Orleans by Congress 3 days ago at the latest.
What has been allowed to continue should never have been allowed. I voted for Bush. I've supported Bush in everything he's done.
But not on this. I have never seen another example of a more inept individual with handling a crisis than this guy. He truly has the "deer in the headlights" look about him.
The military should have been called in to lock down that city and get people out of there as soon as the storm passed.
Unprepared. Totally unprepared. He didn't send the ships from Norfolk to help until Wednesday. Those ships should have been moving right behind the hurricane so that they would have been in place if needed.
Every state should have 20 or 30 warehouses FULL of non-perishable supplies to help out another state in their region, with a main plan, and contingency plans to distribute that aid in the most timely manner possible should a disaster strike.
Bush has been like the idiots we all see on the Discovery Channel out with the video camera staring down the F4 tornado that's about to demolish his house. Then after it gets knocked down, he walks around in a haze as if he's surprised it happened.

Well, at least the media isn't being politically correct. Have you seen these articles descriping the lootings??
Apparently if your a black man taking food to live, you're "looting"
But if your a white couple taking food, your're "finding food"
Lol.
