Calling All Computer Nerds!
I'm getting DSL tomorrow. I've had DSL before and have installed an Ethernet card before too.
Well I had one still in the box, never used. A Linksys 10/100 USB. So I figured I'd jump the gun and install the thing before the tech guy comes over tomorrow morning.
Well of course it just had to bomb. I am running Win98SE on a P-III processor.
Anyway when the Add New Hardware thing came up I followed the instructions. At first my PC said the floppy disk that Linksys provided was not formatted correctly. Well that was bull because when I opened up Windows Explorer and clicked on the drive a: icon, there were all the files. So I copied the correct folder to my Desktop so that way it could find it easier.
Then when it's building the Driver, it asks for the Win98SE Installation Disk - so I plop that sucker in my CD ROM drive so it can find the files it needs - but it can't find ANY of the files at all!
One of the things I'm wondering is do I need the DSL and the Ethernet cable installed before I can install the Linksys USB Adapter?
When I tried to reinstall the Linksys USB Adapter - the Add New Hardware Wizard no longer comes up. So will running the Add New Hardware icon in Settings be the only way I can install the thing?
Why can't it find any of the files it needs in WindowsCabs ??
I looked at the Linksys website and they do have a driver download - and I got it - but theres no new info on the thing that helps. So now I'm stuck.
In the past I used a card instead of a USB adapter - maybe I'll see if I can find that card and put that in instead because I never had a problem with that. Of course, I hope those drivers are still on my pC!
I know this is a Guitar/Music website - but there seems to be a lot of smart people around here so I thought I'd ask.
If anyone has any advise please chime in ok? Thanks!

Ah, installation on Windows 98. A pain in the bum...
I haven't got a Win98 machine in front of me, but you have to force it to look in a location rather than it trying it's Plug and Pray mathod of installing...
It's all a matter of getting through to the "Have Disk" option.
I'd download that new driver to somewhere on your machine, remembering where you installed it.
Then, it's all about getting that Have Disk window. I'm pretty sure you can get to it through the Control Panel -> Add New Hardware Wizard option. But don't let it search for new hardware (recommended) tell it that you have the disk and then browse for the area where you downloaded the files and do it that way...
Like I say, I would be able to help you further but I haven't had or used a Win98 machine in a Long time...
Whatever you do though, don't put Windows ME on there, cuz it's about 1,000 times worse !

The cabs aren't always installed on the machine with win98 but if I recall correctly (and it's been a while) on SE they usually are, if so they would be found in the C:\windows\options\cabs and you may have to type (or copy) this in directly. If not you will need the CD, they are always on there.

Oh yes, you are right with this.
I remember loading all the CAB files from the Win98 install CD onto my P.C. so they were always there for reference rather than putting in the disc every time.
One question Pee Jay, is you're the full Windows 98 Second Edition disk version, or is it just an upgrade disk, or is it one of the first versions.
The Second Edition of Windows 98 was released in order to add more drivers and installation support, wasn't it ?

Yes - it is the Win98 Second Edition CD.
So you copied the cabs over to your hard drive? Thats a good idea.

Yeah, so you didn't have to route around trying to find the CD every time. You could just point it to wherever you copied your CAB files...
Still not sure why it isn't working though, but I do remember having nightmares installing with Win98, it's all about trying to navigate the correct way through the install menus, which would be slightly different from product to product.
There were only very few things I bought that actually worked via Plug and Pray...
I know this doesn't help you out, but just forewarning you that it could well be down to the failures in the Operating System, other than you doing something wrong...

Another thing you can do to reinstall with the right driver is go into your System Properties (Control Panel > System) and then click on the System icon then Device Mangler (er Manager). Then look for your device in there, it will probably have a question mark or a red X. You can right click on it and reinstall, then point it to the new drivers on your desktop.

Windows 98 Second Edition, or 98SE, was released in 1999 and improves tremendously on 98. Some of its unique features include:
- DVD-ROM support: With a DVD drive, you can read data from a DVD and play movies on your PC. A DVD will hold much more data than a standard CD-ROM.
- Internet Connection Sharing: This allows two computers, both running 98SE, to share a single connection to the Internet.
- Improvements on Windows 98: These improvements include faster startup time for running applications, better USB support, and improved power management features.

Where did you copy the cabs to Mondy? What directory? I suppose you could put it anywhere as long as you point the installation to it right?

Thanks for the help Eric.
Yeah I have the Win98SE CD - and I did try and point it to that location - but still no go. I will give it one more shot. I'd rather use the USB Adapter than the card, but if the USB thing doesn't work then I'll have to use the card.
BTW - I tried to install XP but my machine would lock up every time I got on the net. So I took it off. I need to get a new machine soon.

Thanks for the responce Mondy - I did all that. It finds the Linksys folder - but then it asks me to put in the Win98SE disk so it can grab more files. But it doesn't find any of them. I wonder if the Windows website would have them?
Don't know why it does that.
I did manage to find my old Linksys Card that I used in the past. So I think I may just put that in the PC and run that - because I never had a problem installing that when I had DSL before.
Only thing I'm worried about is if the drivers for that Linksys card are on my PC or not. I guess it won't be a problem to get them from the Linksys website if their not - it installed just fine before.

Do you even need an Ethernet card these days for dsl?
I thought the newer modems were straight usb compatible.

I'm not sure.
In the past when I had DSL I needed a Network Card (Ethernet) in order to interface the router.
So I am just assuming that I'll need the same interface. I haven't seen the new router yet - the tech guy will be bringing it over tomorrow morning. Would be cool if you could just plug it in a USB port - but I doubt it.
