Not sure if this goes here or not, but here goes anyway.
The Canadian government is introducing a bill to ban downloading of CD'S DVD'S and "hacking" digital locks placed on materials.
If i download a CD, I can be fined up to $500.00 dollars and doing it for commercial use can lead to a fine of $20,000.
I am curious, if there is anybody out there who lives in a country where downloading is also illegal, how do they find out if you are downloading a CD or DVD for personal use. I admit I have downloaded music from this site and also from several blogs that carry concerts.
So I am a little concerned about this.
Thanks for the input, but I don't think the government (as usual) has thought that far ahead. I was just curious as to HOW they know what you are downloading?
d/loading in and of itself is not illegal. what makes it illegal is the fact that maybe you d/loaded a "unofficial" copy that perhaps you didnt pay for. Like peer to peer sharing sites like limewire or things of that nature. Itunes is legal because you are paying for the "license" to use said material.

Downloading a cd or dvd that is officially released and had been given the band's consent is technically illegal. However, d/l something the band wouldn't have made a cent off anyways (bootlegs) is not illegal
just from reading various news articles, my impression is that under broad legal terms, govt's can 'request' service providers to hand over names tied to specific downloads. kinda like phishing, is one way of putting it.
If you download material that is not copywrited(is that correct?)You won't have any problems. I kinda feel that if you really like an artist, you should probobly support that artist and go out and buy their studio releases. If it's live shows, outtakes & demos that you want to hear, sites like this are totally safe. I don't think anyone can bust you or fine you for downloading ROIO's(Recordings Of Indeterminate Origin)Aka: Bootlegs. Anyway what the hell do Canadians know about music...(just kidding)
Okay, so it's okay to download from sites like this? Is that what you are saying?
Oh yeah, us Canadians do know a little about music, eh. (Only kidding) and thanks for the feedback.
if the Canadian Govt ever passed such a bill they would find very quickly they were way too overwhelmed with the cases that there would be no way to even begin prosecuting them.
