Ebay and Music Gear LOL !
A friend of mine buys a lot of his music gear of Ebay.
Out of the eight ebay deals he has done it seems a pattern is emerging. The dealers in the UK tend to sell repaired and refunded items through Ebay that they cant get rid of in their shops.
You should see some of the junk that as turned up. He paid around £600 on a NEW Marshall Amp that you cant get from under £850 in the cheapest dealers. The Ebay ad listed the item as Brand New, Boxed, Unmarked A1++++ New stock !. When he took the Amp out of its battered box the thing looked like it had done ten rounds with Mike Tyson .
There was no instructions, no warrenty card and the plastic bag it was wrapped in looked like it was used to bury body parts ( LOL ! ).
He noted the serial number down and gave Marshall a ring who told him that the thing had been in for repair twice and was sold new by a dealer over a year ago. After a bit of a battle the dealer refunded and collected the Amp.
He has also had the following ( all listed as NEW, BOXED STOCK )
A Fender Strat -------------> All the pickguard screws were mangled from someone using the wrong size screwdriver on it. Crap all over the fingerboard
A Line 6 Amp --------------> Someone left a note stuck in the back hidden away saying " Dont buy this amp, it has blown up twice " LOL !
A Electro/Acoustic-------> The serial number was listed on an owners website and he made contact with the previous owner to find out they had Part Exchanged it !
I think he has given up now !.
Whats it like over in the states ?

great post dtb
ignorance is bliss in most things, but as your friend has found out you can get burned on ebay even if you are careful, on the more expensive items it certainly does pay to get insurance on that cool axe etc...

Remember the golden rules for some Ebay dealers.
If it is on Ebay it is because they cannot shift it in their shops......and you have to ask why ?
Usually it is because the items are factory seconds, returns, good quality Part Ex's that they claim are new.
Owned by the store keeper who gets bored of it .
Taking advantage of new youngsters who want their first Guitar / Amp ( that bit makes me sick ).
Be careful out there.

Your friend seems to be an idiot. No disrespect, but I have bought and sold literally hundreds of musical items and parts on eBay over the years, and the percent of getting screwed is extrememly small. In fact, the only real problems I have had was receiving a broken guitar (insured so it was covered), and a minor bidding on a guitar then trying to back out. Your buddy needs to learn to ask more questions and pull his head out of his ass before spending money
Give me his screen name to I can watch out for him LOL

He checked out as much as he could. Some of these place are main established high street dealers, you cant get better feedback then that.
The key word here is dealers selling stock on ebay that they dont normally sell

I would never buy a musical instrument or music related product or any kind of motor vehicle from a website. Some things you really need to give the once over and a musical instrument is one of them.

Always, always, always... read through the sellers feedback first!!!! And when you've been screwed in a deal, be sure to leave negative feedback yourself!

I personally will not purchase new gear through ebay... If I want something new, I will get it from musicians friends, or the guitar store. Used equpiment I buy all day long on ebay and have never had a problem

I personally love EBAY. There are great deals to be had there. I have 100% feedback and at times I has cost more to upkeep that status that than anything else, but my jewel so far has been a 77 Ibanez 2218 double cuttaway....excellent guitar at $500 US. I am told it's worth $925 as it's all stock original and an excellent player. Anything I buy get's at least 2 emails to the seller...if he responds quick and has perfect feedback....i start the process...if not...I pass. Anything I have sold has been as good or better than advertised. You sort of have to learn how to make EBAY work for you. It's not bad at all, but I would also stay away from "new" grear as places like Guitarcenter will offer 30 days....much better than anything EBAY will offer.

Wow....I have to agree with EJ on this one. I have bought and sold lots of musical gear on E-bay with never a probem. You have to ask a lot of questions, check feedback, and pay accordingly to what you are buying.
If a dealer or person is selling crap....the feedback will show it. Most selling "new" gear offer a money back guarantee.
Many times I have researched things on E-bay and used that as a guide to get a local shop to make me a better deal on a new product.....did it just today on a set of EMG's.
Keep in mind that if you buy something and get a good deal.....you can always sell it again if you don't need it and get your money back. I do it all the time.

Aye I agree they do, but perhaps some " Dealer Sellers "rely on people not bothering. LIke I said, he got refunded on all these dodgy deals, but some people may have not noticed.
I dont have a problem buying from people, in fact all the best deals and gear I have ever got have been through private ebays.
Although some dipshite once paid £800 for a PA that the very same dealer who was selling another one on buy now for £695 LOL !

DTB, I am not understanding your intent here. You said your friend had dodgy deals, but got refunds on everything, so the deals certainly weren't dodgy. What's up with that?

Dtb's guide to dodgy deals as expressed in the very first post.
Buying an item advetised as NEW, UNUSED and then finding out it is second hand and well used.
That is a dodgy deal in anyones country.
Just because the seller refunded , it does not make it a genuine honest deal.
Jeez !
