BROAD GENERALIZATION MODE: ENABLED
Why the hell is this music so popular? What is it about rap and
hip hop that garners mass-appeal. With the exception of a few gems, musically, the genre kind of bores me. The same beats over and over and the monotone vocals (well, more monotone then traditional "singing") are kind of redundant. I much prefered the earlier days of rap when the rappers actually sang (i.e. Grandmaster Flash).
Aestetically, the whole hip-hop culture kinda freaks me out and I really don't see how anyone can relate to this stuff (barring actual inner-city gang members). Reducing women to sexual objects is kinda sickening (didn't you women folk have some kind of revolution in the 70's so you wouldn't have to be treated as mere sex objects). Glorifying violence and murder just leaves a sour taste in my mouth.
Yet, for all of its lack of musicality and shamless displays of gratuitious sex and violence, the public loves this crap. What gives? I can only conclude from record sales and general pervasiveness within popular culture that:
(1) Much hip-hop/rap doesn't celebrate violence and degredation
(2) The genre does celebrate violence and degreation and, for some reason I've yet to understand, men don't mind degrading women and women don't mind being degraded. (possibly due to some kind of Freudian "Death Instinct"
(3) I have a warped view of reality
Which is it??
