It\'s all Eddie\'s fault!!
I don’t know about the rest of you out there, but hearing Eddie Van Halen for the first time was the defining moment for me to pick up and learn guitar. Since I was sixteen (a long time ago!) I’ve gone through a lot of equipment – buying, trading, selling – but mostly keeping.
This morning while my wife was still asleep, I started going through my rig to see how much guitar “stuff” I’ve accumulated over the years. After going through the closet for about a half-hour, I decided to inventory all of my junk. I created a spreadsheet that shows: type of equipment, serial #, description, date purchased, original purchase price, street value, and any notes (I should have done this long ago for insurance purposes anyways). To my surprise, over the course of 23 years, I have accumulated about $6,000 worth of musical instruments, effects, amps, etc… – YIKES! The silver lining here is that my old junk probably has a street value of about $8,000. If any of you out there haven’t done this exercise, it could be an eye opening experience to say the least.
In any case, when my wife asks me why in the world do I have so much junk, I can tell her that it’s all Eddie’s fault!

Re: It\'s all Eddie\'s fault!!
Very good post.
I can't say I have a lot of gear, but I sure wish I did. If I were single I would probably end up succumbing to GAS and fill my place with Marshall stacks. a drum set and so on.

The screwed up part is that Eddie is the reason that I play bass, not guitar. He inspired me to make music. Yes, I've got some gear, but instead of the money, think of the TIME we've invested in music. It doesn't matter if it's listening, playing, writing, practicing. That's the real scary part. Thank you Eddie.

Re: It\'s all Eddie\'s fault!!
I have to admit also that after the first time I listend to Ed in 1979...I sure wanted a guitar. I played a lot of air guitar, but could not affort a real one until 1985. I bought so much gear over the years I can't even remember it all....and I still have a room full of stuff.
A lot of my stuff is EVH endorsed so at least Ed's getting paid....but it is all Eddie's fault.
