Metallica - St. Anger : What do YOU think ?

Hi there,

I have just bought this album today. I read on VHForums.com that the release date was being brought forward, so I went out and bought it.

I've always thought Metallica were incapable of creating a bad record, so I knew it wouldn't be money wasted.

Wow. This album is different ! I'm not so sure I am ever going to get into this. But maybe that's because I am more a fan of the Black Album and stuff like that. It's extrememly heavy, with lots of tempo changes. The guitar has a real moody grunge to it.

I listened to it twice, then had to stop for a while because it really is so heavy (for me anyway) and there is so much going on that it was making my head spin.

I think people who enjoyed the original sound will love this album, but people like me will take a little while to get into it.

Time will tell whether it makes it into a frequent player or it gathers dust....

Thanks for you review dude. I am honestly not sure whether I want to buy this or not after all the negative stuff I am hearing about it. Is it true that most of the songs don't have guitar solo's in them? Maybe I will just download a track or two from Kazaa to help me choose.

Yeah, pretty much. Just lots of heavy guitar. One of them has a crackly guitar, that sounds like it has a dodgy connection. It's well irritating... I spent ages trying to get rid of a crackle like that, and they've incorporated it into the recording.

At the moment, it's still at that mold of songs, and I can't differentiate between them yet.

But no, definitely no solos, and very heavy, moody, dare I say, depressing ? music. Some crazy guitar work, and shifts in tempo, though.

'Appen it will grow on me, I will let you know. I'll watch the DVD tonight to see if that makes any difference...

I'm getting the feeling that it may be another VHIII kind of thing.
I don't want to pay for it if I'm going to be upset and unhappy. I'll wait until a friend buys it to copy it.

I don't believe in needing to listen to an album for a long time before it sinks in (with the exeption of progressive bands of course).
AC/DC's Back In Black grabbed me by the ears on first listen and never let go (even to this day)
Led Zeppelin's IV has been doing the same for 30 years...
How about Appetite for Destruction from GNR?
And Megadeth's Rust In Peace?

I'm getting really bad vibes from this St Anger.

Yeah, it is very difficult and different.

I agree with what you are saying to a certain extent. But there are some albums that I listened to and instantly liked. Then on subsequent listens, they never got any better, and I realised that they were boring, and I lost interest.

But other albums have taken a few listens to grow on me.

I'll give this album a fair chance, but it's not looking too good so far. I didn't put the DVD on though, as I was trying to figure out Mean Street last night...

Not too crazy about it myself. I think it was way overhyped! They should've just used a couple of the better songs for a soundtrack and canned the rest. No solos, not much bass, Lar$ has an annoying snare-sound, and a nu-metal approach wasn't a great idea. (The DVD rehearsal sounded better IMO!)These guys used to be innovators-now they're just copycats. I'm not a big fan of Godsmack, but even they put out a better record this year! If you want a rock-solid cd, go buy Audioslave's debut or Jerry Cantrell's Degradation Trip Vol 1 & 2!
