As some of you know I live sort of close to this mountain and it's been active again for the last year. Yesterday I took the day off and decided to drive up there and get some pics. These are pretty much a look right into the crater from 5 miles away.
Wow some great pics there Eric....i have seen mount etna when i was over in Catania and i cant tell you the feeling i got .. Looking at your pics has brought it all back a wonderfull but scary feeling
Awesome! Nature at it's most primeval. I remember all the facts and figures about the eruption were amazing...someone stood in a forest 15 miles from the blast and every tree knocked down like matchsticks? Woo!
I posted last year about Lanzarote in the Atlantic off the West Coast of Africa. It too is a dormant but still live volcano that would have a diseways blast like Mt Saint Helens. The experts reckon that if it did erupt, it would send something like 250,000 tons of mountain into the sea which would set off a wave that would be over 2,000ft high by the time it reached the Eastern Sea Board of the US!!!!! It would basically be goodbye to about 1/5th of the US. Amazing things these volcanoes!
Thanks for the pics..awesome.
