Origin of the word \"Shred\"

Does anyone know where this word came from as it applies to guitar playing?? Its kind of a weird word to describe guitar playing, my guess is that it has something to do with the guitar being a piece of wood. Dunno though.

Very fast player. Like, that dude rips!
And then from rips we get..
That dude rips so fast he's like a paper shreder.

Could be wrong though.

hmm.. well .. the word shredd brings to mind something sinister and fast and almost deadly . the styl of shredd guitar could be described in a similar way . maybe some dude just started playing really fast one day and his friend said .. "man .. thats shred" lol .. who knows .. not me

Re: Origin of the word \"Shred\"

I had an interview with joe satriani where he described what shred was and he said the real meaning of it was just music that pushes the barrier or is very extreme or something ... i think he then said a more narrower meaning was the dive bombs the fast picking the tapping etc .
