Stupid Stereotypes

Anyone have any pre-conceived stereotypes about people you know little about?

I'm from Texas and I want to put to rest that we are all cowboys and dress like John Wayne [img]images/smilies/icon_mad.gif[/img] [img]images/smilies/icon_lol.gif[/img] I was born and raised here, 37 yrs and I rarely ever see anyone wearing a cowboy hat. Maybe farmers way out in the middle of nowhere wear boots and hats.....If you go to a Country music dance club, you might see a few but mostly we are no different than anywhere else in the world. I went to a high school where rednecks were a minority! Everyone was a Metal head [img]images/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif[/img]

Movies always depict Texas businessmen getting on a private jet wearing a ten gallon hat and a cowboy suit but you just don't see that here [img]images/smilies/headscratch.gif[/img] Very Very rarely.

I've always had a stereotype of Italians all being in the Mafia or related to a mobster. My favorite movies are Mob movies. C'mon Italians, tell me it ain't so.......... [img]images/smilies/icon_lol.gif[/img]

People think that all us black guys love rap music, play basketball, have gold teeth, and can't speak the english language. None of those are true.

I have some black friends that aren't like that at all...a few like rap but they like Old Metal mostly. A good friend of mine who is black told me that alot of black people won't admit they like rock or country music because of some obligation to black culture or for fear their peers will make fun of them for liking "white" music! I think that's silly since rock n roll was invented by blacks and bluesmen...its merely an evolution of early black influenced music that white musicians adopted and made their own. White artists just got more credit for it.

I'm sure Flavor-Flav doesn't help the stereotype any. [img]images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif[/img]

LOL No flava flav doesnt, but in his prime, he and Public Enemy wrote some of the most ground breaking hip hop ever. Atleast he was trying to get a message across eventhough he's always been a goof. So I'll atleast give him credit for that. Rappers today are just about the bling bling and all that other crap.

As far as your black friends go, I kinda see where they're coming from, but anybody that knows me, or has met me knows that I dont give a shit what anybody thinks. I love hard rock music, along with everything else. But hard rock has always moved me more then anything. There's just something about a power chord that has just always fired me up. Yea I took flack for it when I was younger, but I was later respected for being my own person and being so diverse.

Just to diverse slightly, I think that Rock is the only genre of music that hasn't any air's, graces or prejudices. It truly breaks down the barriers of colour, creed and religion.
