Just checked riffsonline .... another band I was in for 2 weeks is on at The Alice tonight .... "The Square Bootz". I tried out with them about 6 months ago, but it wasn't really working out - trying to shoehorn two guitars into a host of single-guitar songs. They play more modern Indie stuff (Kaiser Chiefs, etc) when my heart & soul are still stuck in the 70s and 80s. Their guitarist is phenomenal though, 19 and a real shredder. Lives in Ingleby Barwick (as if that makes a difference).
They do stonking covers of "My Sharona" and U2's "One" & "Vertigo" too
Not much else on really locally, unless you travel a bit further afield ...

Can't comment on reason 2 - except MAKE time - if it's what you want and wish for.
as for 1, well I'm 41 & just re-discovering what I've missed (and how!) for the past 13 years. It's like coming home after a long, exhausting and stressful trip.
I used to be so uptight and stressed, working for "the man" and trying to build a career and a 'better life' - just to find that no matter where I land up in the office, I'm always going to be dropped on from a height and kept down below, cause I'm good at my job and 'they' want to keep me in it.
Since re-discovering the euphoria I get, and always got back in 'the day' from playing live and having an audience appreciate it, well ..... STUFF "the man" - nothing compares with that natural high .. it's almost better than sex!! (not quite though). I can always stack shelves for a living instead if I have to, but if I can paraphrase from 'Chuck' Heston...
They can have my guitar .... when they prise it from my cold, dead fist!
and as for 3, from what I've heard there's no probs on that score - besides you don't get better if you don't do it.
No time like the present ..... in the words of the great man ... Just DO it ..... you'll only regret it later if you don't.

Man, after reading this, I envy you, ya gddamn lucky fellow, I just wish life went back like ten-fifteen years, but Eulerīs spiral has gone too far for me,..But anyways, Iīm happy enough playing my nonsense stuff at home and having this nice site with such nice folks.
