Jam

To Jam or not to Jam that is the question.

-OLD POST-
Remember when the term "jamming" or "Rockin'" meant exactly that and referred to listening to and rockin' out to Metal music or some form of heavy rock? I remember the "Texas Jam" with bands like VH, Scorps,Priest, etc. Well nowadays that the term is used more often with Country music? There is a local concert coming up where I live called the "Texas Jam" featuring all Country bands?.....there are TV shows called "Rockin' Country Jam"...huh??

I heard a radio commercial the other day saying "Come Rock out with Pat Green" a local country music recording artist....and umm...he doesn't "Rock". I hear people say they like to Jam to Johnny Cash for example. What! How can you Jam to Johnny Cash? I respect his work but that ain't jamming material or is any country music.

I often ask myself "What is this world coming to?" It's funny how terminology changes with each generation. Its just like modern metal to me, isn't real metal because bands like Priest and Maiden are true metal bands but the label has changed now.

Just thought I'd mention it..I'm very bored.

To me, jammin is just on the spot improv. Nothing planned at all. You can jam in jazz, country, rock, blues, whatever.

That is why it is called nu metal. It isn't heavy metal, it is something different. Just like death metal, thrash, etc...

Yeah, nowadays its perfectly ok to "jam" to whatever music you're into but back in the day, it was totally opposite. No one said that back then.

Jamming has always meant to me----2 or more musicians getting together to play improvised music.

When was this back in the day? I have never heard the term "jam" used any other way. Could it be that "back in the day" you were more limited in what you listened to and who you interacted with? "Back in the day" all I did was play metal and thrash. If you had asked me to play jazz I would have teased you to no end.

Sometimes we would play songs. Other times we would just "jam". I still use it that way, but my musical tastes have changed to include things that I didn't include before. So whereas "back in the day" I only jammed in metal, rock, and sometimes blues, and I only interacted with players of like mind, now days things are more inclusive. I don't consider that to mean that the term has changed in its meaning.

Jazz and blues players have been jamming since before metal ever existed! Same with country.

And I am not devaluing your opinion, I am disagreeing with it. I value your position and your posts...blah blah and all that mutual wankery. Don't assume that because I disagree, even strongly sometimes, that I don't respect you...and I am not saying you do, I just makin' sure so there is no misunderstanding.

to me to jam is like the others say when a group of musos just go with the flow, this bit may be a bit controversial to a few but even 2 turntables and a mike is jamming. IMHO

To put it in old fart terms...back in the day is usually used by musician's my age to describe the late 70's, and 80's rock days.

I never heard anyone say in 1982 that they were "jamming to Hank Williams"
Sounds absurd to me. We always jammed in a rock band or jammed while listening to hard rock.....it doesn't matter for God's sake, I was just bored and was wondering if I was the only one who thought this way. I didn't expect anyone to go and get their feathers ruffled over a stupid slang term. I respect your opinions as well man. Keep em comin'...thats what makes everything interesting.

Jeez, who knew such a simple question could get people stirred up? Riff, I hear ya, but to me I could jam to any music. Whether I was playing it, or just listening, either way I could jam.

Riff, I am an "old fart" and I know what you mean. To say you are going to jam to anything other than rock to me sounds funny BUT I do equate jamming to just getting together and doing just that...jamming.

I swear nroberts is either brainpolice or is related to him...he acts just like the guy.

If that is supposed to be an insult it seems pretty uncalled for.

Jam=hanging out with a bunch of guys and improvise over a certain set of chords or a beat, no matter what style, mostly funky and blues stuff and some fusion.
Or play along with your cd/lp player at home...dat too was jamming

Maybe the term "jam" has been co opted by the country people since these days country is more like rock than it is like "real" country? I dont know - just guessing.

I think I'll go fix myself a jam sandwich...........

Shit - I've really gotten myself into a jam now!
