Any gig is better than NO gig. You can learn from anything. A musician should play, no matter what the gig.

Re: to play or not to play

hmm..i dont think its possible to blend shredd into mainstrea,
firstly, most people dont like shredd and fast riffs..they like catchy electronic pop tunes and stuff which they can hum or sing along to. secondly, throwing in some shredd parts into a mainstream pop song just sounds weird..imagine listening to some stupid backshit boys love song and suddenly some crazy shredding solo comes in the middle..weird ain't it? thirdly, shredding might not appeal to most people if in excessive amounts aka malmsteen, rusty cooley because its just like a flurry of emotionless dead notes, yea some shredd is nice it spices up the song but if done too excessively..its just boring..i think that's why 80s hair bands died out...

just my 2 cents worth

Re: to play or not to play

Before shredding over a song make sure the song is good. Make sure it is catchy and has a killer hook and a good melody then and only IF it needs a guitar solo then do one. There is no point in spoiling a potential hit with mindless shredding as you will just get laughed at. Think of the song first. If you really need to shred and get it out of your system, come on here and do it. I don't really think you can bring shred into mainstream music.

As my Dad always said: " You do what you have to do to buy your Gas and Guitar strings"
If money is NOT a factor in that gig, do what makes you feel comfortable. Nothing WORSE that being in a situation you don't have to be in!!
