Fake gynecologist faces sex charges

An Ovilla man accused of practicing medicine without a license could face sexual assault charges if authorities find that he performed gynecological exams, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Thomas Patrick Remo, 50, was arrested in August after an investigator for the Dallas County district attorney's office spotted a suspicious advertisement in a weekly newspaper. The ad, which offered free "discrete" exams, prompted an undercover investigation. With help from the FBI's Health Care Fraud Unit, an investigator set up an appointment and posed as a prospective patient at Mr. Remo's small clinic in an office at a self-storage business on South Clark Road in Cedar Hill.

The investigator wore a concealed video camera and recorded Mr. Remo discussing his medical credentials and the scope of the Pap smear exam that he would perform.

Prosecutor Bridget Eyler said the facility appeared to be furnished like a doctor's office. Mr. Remo was wearing white pants and a white medical scrub shirt and had a stethoscope around his neck, according to court records.

"It did look like a legitimate medical office," Ms. Eyler said. "We don't know if he had any [patients], but if he did have any, that could be sexual assault."

Mr. Remo, who officials said also used the name Dr. Jim Patrick, has been indicted on three counts of practicing medicine without a license, a third-degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

If investigators find that anyone received gynecological exams from him in the belief that he was a licensed doctor, Ms. Eyler said, he could face second-degree felony charges of sexual assault. Mr. Remo remains in custody.

Anyone who had an appointment with Mr. Remo can call prosecutors at 214-653-3714.
