Wheelies at 80 mph
Driving around New York I have been seeing allot more gangs of kids on "crotch rockets" razing hell on the highways. On numerous occasions they have gone flying by doing wheelies at 80 + miles an hour. In some ways it's kinda cool, but they are going to kill someone besides themselves sooner or later. Anybody ells see these guys?

Re: Wheelies at 80 mph
A mate of mine died doing this in the UK. Dual carraige way, completely open. Decided to do a wheelie at 80 mph + down it. Was great until someone edged the nose of their car out to see if anything was coming. He didn't see the car, the car didn't see him...
He didn't stand much chance...

Re: Wheelies at 80 mph
This is going to sound harsh but I think people who take this kind of risk deserve to die.
I am very fond of motorcycle racing and wheelies are spectacular and fun. There's a place for them: it's called a racetrack. Going 150 mph on a bike is loads of fun and relatively safe in the context of a racetrack and I wish I could do it myself. I must have missed my calling.
The problem is, that when you are 20 years old you are convinced you are indestructible, so you do this kind of stuff and think nothing of it until you get (very briefly) acquainted with the grille of an uncoming vehicle...
It's true that most of the time, kids end up getting away with their improvised stunts, in the same manner drunk drivers often get home safe... Still doesn't make it alright in my book.
Mondola, it's a shame your friend's death turned you off motorcycles, because they really can be a wonderful experience if you put the chances on your side.
Sorry for the long rant.

Re: Wheelies at 80 mph
Hey, CC, no, I'm not put off them, I love them. I'd actually love to own one. However, I'm a superstitious bastard, and my family has a history of very painful near misses, for everyone that has ever owned one.
It boils down to the fact that you can be extremely confident in your own ability, but when you go out on that road, you're putting your life in the hands of all those other dickhead drivers out there.
So I'd rather be amongst the saftey of airbags, side impact bars and a cage of metal when zipping around the roads, than on a bike. After being in a crash recently, I appreciate my comforts, reassurance and safety that my Chrysler Neon gives me when I put myself amongst all the plonkers out there on the road.
Plus, I don't want to get wet if it rains !!!!

As for my mate, he was being a dickhead. As far as saying he deserved to die, I couldn't go that far, but he did it in the middle of the town centre dual carriageway, so it was lucky no other innocent party got killed in the process as well.
I'll stick to my fast racing on Gran Turismo thanx. Crashes cost money and hurt like fook !!! Much rather hit the replay button on the PS2 !!!

Re: Wheelies at 80 mph
To be honest these guys are extremely frightening and appear to have the attitude that they are untouchable. They travel in large gangs and when their not doing wheelies or aggressively weaving around cars they are flat out racing each other down congested highways at 100mph+. Another thing these assholes get a kick out of doing is creeping along cars stopped in traffic and when they see a guy with his window open they coast up and abruptly rev their engine very loudly: scaring the holly shit out of these unsuspecting people.
I don't wish harm on these guys, but I did see one particularly aggressive dude go down quite violently and I have to say It gave me a sense that justice had been served, it's just too bad that some poor girl had to get the side of her car smashed in.

Re: Wheelies at 80 mph
Well, as the add says, when you drives one of those, you're the bumper....I'm not against strong, adrenaline driven sports or hobbies, as long as they don't endanger other people's life!

Re: Wheelies at 80 mph
Some people are just born stupid. When people take unecessary risks then get hurt or killed, they get no sympathy from me. People who smoke and drink themselves to cancer or death get no sympathy from me either.
The only people I respect for putting themselves in harm's way are the Men and Women of the U.S. Military (and our allies) who sacrifice their lives to protect us and preserve the freedoms we all enjoy and take for granted and want to make the world a safer place to live, also Police officers, Firemen, and others who serve us.

Re: Wheelies at 80 mph
I was riding through Harriman State Park off Route 17 in NY and on Seven Lakes Drive there's a 40 MPH speed restriction...it's a fucking huge state park with bears, deer, etc so why the fuck would you need to fly through it? Anyway, I was riding with about 3 others and I guess we weren't going fast enough for this small pack on crotch rockets. They took turns flying by us at ridiculous speeds. The last one had to wait for a car in the opposite lane to pass when he did it was at a turn and when the fucker zoomed past us he almost went into a park tropper! Gotta love it when justice is served...that dude prolly got some stack of tickets but I betcha he still rides like a prick.

Re: Wheelies at 80 mph
I agree with canyoncarver completely.....a time and place for everything.......hell i'm an adrylin junkie...jumping out of planes, ridding the motorcycle, ect....whatever the thrill/risk may be, they are caculated planned risks which endanger no one....every safety percaution is taken. people who act like that get what they deserve eventually.....ok i'll get off my soap box now
