In most cases they are just momentary contact switches. This means that when you step on them they close a circuit for a moment (until you take your foot off) there are also momentary break the circuit set ups and I forget the name of them but it is the inverse. These are used to change channels etc. on modern amps because once you provide continuity for a moment hence monentary contact they switch channels (its the circuit design that does this after you make the contact). On older amps these switches are often a single pole double throw switch which actually are a part of the circuit. (like an old fender twin)
The Momentary switchs can be bought premade in a case for around $20...so they are really not worth making. The other type ...single pole double thow stomp switches can be purchased online or at your local electronics store.
You should post what amp it is that you are trying to do this for or just call a music store and they will tell you what you need then you can either buy one ( much easier) or make one. Good Luck! Ron
