another pick-ups/amp question...

I know this is a played out subject, but I am looking for some new pickups for my axe. Im looking to have a tone similar to what megadeth had on Countdown to Extinction or youthanasia.

So far my setup is this,

Guitar - Peavy EXP V-Type (not the greatest guitar, but I am very picky about my guitars and I like the way this one plays)

Amplification, I Run an old no name 4x12 with celestian speakers. I have a MossValve 150watt Stereo PowerAmp, (I run it mono, because I have not yet modified the cab to be stereo)

Now as for my preamp it is a DOD RP50, I started playing a few months ago and all the above was the left over gear that I never sold, I was on a budget and needed something cheap that I could easily replace later.

So I am looking for ideas on replacement pickups and a preamp, I want a heavy cruch sound, like mentioned above... I want something that will make an awesome rythem sound. I like playing lead but when I get another band started my focus will be rythem and singing.. so a lead tone is not really needed.

amp pickup Question

It seems to me that getting crunch in your sound is mostly the amps doings.
Some dont do it well. Not being familiar with what kinda sound your amp is capable of making any answer would be a guess. Thats no good.
People will probably answer your pickup choice question by answering with whatever type pickup they happen to be using at the time. Any type of Humbucker thats wound hot should work if the amps up to snuff. If you want crunch I recommend tubes. I believe your amp has power tubes doesnt it?Tube preamps with SS power amps dont make it IMO

The power amp is just a power amp for powering the guitar.. It is not a tube amp. The RP50 is what I am using for tone definition currently.. I can upgrade to another processor if needed, or another amp that is a more suitable power amp.

I do think a tube amp sound would be best but out of my price range at the moment... Unless I can find a cheap digitech 2112 or 2120 on ebay. But they still go for about $6-700+.

If a tube amp is wha tI need to attain that crunchy sound I am looking for then that is what I will be searching out..

If anyone has any recommendations suggestions or opinions please provide them.

Amp pickup question

You know what man? For recording a small wattage tube amp works well.
Awhile back I bought a single power tubeEL84 1965 Harmony H410 for $130.It sounds great. With the old amps you might want to figure in the price of replacing the filter caps(tech) at around $100 . Unless you want to upgrade speakers and install a 3 prong power cord that should be the total cost. With the small wattege tube amps it doesnt take a lot of volume to overdive them and most will crunch like crackers. Most of the older models have a tube rectifier which I prefer over SS(diodes) because they give you sag and compression.I'd stay away from any type that doesnt have a power transformer .Thery're shit and dangerous. Not many were made that way but its something to be aware of. Do a little research on the web .Theres all kinds of information on small tube amps.
Good luck and BCOOL
