Re: awesome 12 year old guitar player

12 fucking years old? I remember surfing guitar9 last year and landing on this kid's page. I meant to bookmark it but forgot. I looked to try to find it again but forgot his name.

All I have to say is that that kid fooking smokes! He actually went beyond impressing me. He actually inspired me. If he was living down the street from me, I would have paid him for a few lessons. jealous, whatever. All this kid does is speed, which anyone can do. Here i figured out his fast lick and played it a bit faster, how lame i even did this.

Re: awesome 12 year old guitar player

i like real guitarists and playing like SRV. i would say this good is good for 12 and hes heading in the right direction but speed playing alone is boring to me. ryhthm playing is as big if not a bigger part in playing songs imo.

I dont know what yer thinking eddie, but uh. This kid is amazing for 12 years old. On the other hand...from listening to his mp3s...I'd say a good half the time...Its so obvious what a petrucci ripoff he is. Its obvious hes trying to be like petrucci. And one of the songs it was obvious he was trying to be like vai. Regardless of that though, im still amazed this kid was 12 when he recorded it. Hes usiing cool odd time signatures and phrasing in there (which i knew all about when i was 12 too, but i absolutely sucked at guitar). I agree though that the "shred" genre is very stale. Theres nothing going on in the music besides egotistical guitar. Do drummers listen to shred music? No. Do keybaordists? No. Its all about self indulgent guitar work, therefore it mostly attracts guitarists who want to become self indulgent guitars themselves one day. Either way though...I couldnt knock this kid.

lol theres shred music everywhere no matter what instrument you listen to it's just not as recognised as guitar because guitar shred was popular back in the 80's ...some classical music is shred all over .. who whould've thought bass had shred until you head of billy sheehan ?

He is awesome I think. God I wish I could play like that when I was his age too. He has a very mature sound in his playing and he also has the speed thing too.

Re: awesome 12 year old guitar player

I still think most shred is a pile of crap. Its a guy soloing the entire time over "background music"; so the function of the rest of the instruments are minimalized. There is no good songwritting most of the time, because its a guitar solo the entire song. Also, many of the shredders all sound very similar. You have your neoclassical only guys, who mostly are all what id like to call Yngwie Clones....As well as other countless players who rip eachother off quite blatantly.
I dont think classical music and shred have any connection. Just because there is a neoclassical guitar movement...doesnt pin point the actual classical as shreddy music. Many neoclassical guys in fact - dont even make very classical like music. Just because you do a bunch of straight 16th notes with harmonic minor doesnt make something "classicalish". Does Yngwie write in 4 point counterpoint? No. Whats all traditional classical music in? 4 part cointerpoint.
My main point here is: How many shredders have to all sound the same, play the same type of licks over the same "background music", and people still act like its something new and refreshing when they hear it. Yea this kid is damn straight amazing for 12....but is he an individual? Does every song not sound like he's ripping off another player? Think about it.

Re: awesome 12 year old guitar player

well, i dont want people to get mad at me like they have a few other people in this post butttttttttttttt... heres my opinion.. this kid is definatly good, but he isn't anything that insane.. i disliked his music, and herad some definate rip offs of other guitarists, in the first song, petrucci, and in one of the other songs, vai.. hes got some chops, but i think many of us on guitars101, or on yahoo could have been this good or better, if we had played starting a 9, and then were looked at , at 12.. i personally have played for 3 years, and only started shredding about 5 or 6 months ago, and i think i could blow this kid apart in a duel.. ive of course just turned 16, so theres your difference.. but we both have played 3 years if i judge him by his recordings.. i wouldn't say he shredded in his music, i would say it was just virtuosic.... i would really be interested to hear what he sounds like now.. also, i know a guy off yahoo who is 16 goin on 17, and has played for 6 years, shredding about 2 and a half, and i bet he could have blown the pants off this guy when he was 12, you should really check this guy out.. his id is noise_epidemic.. he is almost as fast as the great "neospirit" but he plays fusion too!! ( you should hear the fusion arps he can play! )
anyways, this is just my opinion, and i hope i adressed it better than some people have, and don't get any bad respsonses..
peace!

Re: awesome 12 year old guitar player

I have a few points to make. I have been playing for 20 years. When I was 3 years old, I sat down at the piano and started playing things that I heard. I have been in music all of my life. I have taught both rock and classical guitar. I took first place in guitar competitions. I really doubt that I would blow that kid away. I don't care how fucking old the kid is, he smokes. He has speed, a very clean picking style, nice phrasing, nice vibrato, great tone, and exceptional compositional skills. If he were 50, he would STILL be smoking. I've heard things posted on this site which were 1/100th as good as this kid's stuff and everyone was saying how awesome it was. Go figure.

I believe that true musical talent exists in knowing how bad you really are. I have a thing about watching American Idol. I find it very entertaining. If any of you have watched it, you can recall that the worst singers thought that they were truly good, even amazing. It was the amazing singers who were the ones who didn't think they were very good. Go figure.

Then, a very wise record exec said something which most of us will never experience. As one of the finalists auditioned in front of him, he said to her that she is going to run into people who are going to hate her and she is not going to know why. He went on to explain that her level of talent is so enormous that people will become very jealous and hate her for it. I think this kid has that kind of talent... why else would anyone bash someone that good?

Also, I find it quite ironic that anyone would bash a shredder on a site dedicated to Van Halen. After all, Eddie was the original shredder.
