Building A Flying V

Hi there,

Well, after reading about the guitar that Elysian is building at guitar school, and after watching several guys on here post their own guitar project, the urge finally took hold of me and I decided to join up to a guitar making and repair class.

So now I need to find myself a guitar plan. I've found a few resources out there, but I was wondering if you guys could recommend anywhere. I was thinking of doing a Flying V, as I figured that would probably be easiest, but that's just an assumption.

I'd need it to be life size and as detailed as possible for a dick like me who doesn't know what he is doing.

:jerkit:

I'll keep searching myself, I already got a few hits, just if anyone has any recommendations on the way, it would really help me out.

I suggest reading through some of the tutorials on this site ...
http://www.projectguitar.com/

The site has alot of good info., but I strongly suggest staying clear from the forum section.
Those guys are more into themselves then helping others.
At least that's been my personal experience.

Hi there D.i.n.o,

Thanx for the link. I'd seen this site already from Elysian's link.

There's some good stuff on there, and it's damn encouraging, but it's really all the same as reading all the stuff that you guys post on here.

i.e. it's brilliant advice, but it just serves to inspre me even further.

Which is why I want to get started ASAP, but I really need guitar plans and the body. Thing is, obviously I can't view these guitar plans before I purchase to determine their quality, so I'm just a bit stuck as to which one to go with. I just don't wanna fork out 16 quid and find out it serves as expensive toilet paper !

Good stuff if you have the prior experience and knowledge to do so.

I don't, so I need as detailed plans as possible in order to build up this experience and confidence so I can ensure everything is their and I can then check, double check, triple check, and quadruple check everything along the way !!!

I will definitely build one. It is just a matter of ensuring I can actually get started next Monday. If I cannot manage to get the plans and wood that I require by then, then I will just buy the parts and do that.

I have already realised that the flying v might be a bit too ambitious due to the glue on neck and angled headstock. Although I accept that my first attempt is not going to be perfect, I want to manage to do a great job.

My preferred approach is to cut out the wood and such, but the most important thing for me is to get started. So if that means a self build kit, then so be it. I can always then graduate to cutting wood on the next one I do.

Yep, get a guitar builder kit, so all you have to do is assemble the guitar. That will get your feet wet. Warmoth has all the parts you need, but you need to look for a UK equivalent.

Can't help you there.

Well, I have said, "Fuck it ! It be 'reet !"

I have ordered the wood and a Flying V guitar plan. I feel as if I'd be cheating myself with a kit, and I really want the experience and buzz of being able to say I built the bloody thing myself from scratch.

Plus, all the other guys on the course are making acoustics. A lot harder than what I am doing with a solid body electric. However, they have all the support they need and the finished products look great.

So I know that the tutors have all the experience to help me along the way. So the set neck issue isn't going to be a problem.

Plus, I can always get a cheap body as well and work on it as well as since the tutor was saying to one of the other guys that he is more than welcome to bring in a couple of guitar parts he has lying around to assemble them under the tutor's watchful eye.

Fingers crossed the wood and plans arrive by Monday !

Well, I got my Flying V guitar plans today, and, having thrown caution to the wind, they have turned out to be extremely detailed.

One of my main problems was the fact that I couldn't preview the designs before I ordered them.

Anyway, I am VERY happy with them.

Now it's just keeping my fingers crossed that my mahogany luthier wood arrives by Monday !

Hey Mondola, this sounds like a great idea. You've really peaked my interest. I'm now starting to wonder if there are similar courses in my area. Are you in UK or US? How did you go about finding a course.

Good luck with the course.

Hi there mate,

It was all born from the fact that I have absolutely no confidence with working on guitars at all. Plus, loads of people on here reagard many tasks that I consider complex to be simple.

I'm not prepared to fuck around with my guitars in order to gain the necessary experience, nor am I going to buy a "cheap" one off ebay to mess up.

So I found this evening course, one night a week, two hours each night. So far, the course costs me £10 per session and the wood has cost me £35 and the guitar plans a tenner of ebay.

Even if I don't complete the guitar, I will pick up the experience I am looking for, whilst having the safety net of a fully qualified tutor to fall back on to fill in the gaps in my knowledge and experience.

I'm in the UK mate. I just plugged shit loads of information into google until I found stuff near me. There's shit loads of more intense courses that you pay £1000's of pounds for, but if I had that kinda money, I wouldn't be bothering about building guitars or repairting them, I'd just buy loadsa guitars and send them off to experts all the time.

No, I am happy with this solution. Anyway, here's some of the places I found:

http://www.totnesschoolofguitarmaking.co.uk/
http://www.spanishguitars.co.uk/page...nalcourse.html
http://www.hotcourses.com/adult_learning/

But just keep searching. There's bound to be something out there. I didn't find something in Berskshire, so had to drive into Surrey (hour and a half) to get the course I want to go to...
