Cymbal question

I bought a used drum set for my son the other day and it's in very good shape.

The cymbals bother me a bit though, simply because of their finish. They are Zildjian and are clear coated. After so many years of use, the clear has worn off on the top hi-hat and there's a large area that's very dull and oxydized.
If I polish that, it'll reflect like a mirror, but the rest of the cymbal being coated, it will look odd.

I'm considering stripping the clear on the whole surface and polishing the snot out of the entire cymbal. I'm not affraid to polish—I do this all the time with the car and the motorcycle so that's not really an issue.

Anyreason why I should not go ahead and polish the hi-hats and the ride?

Re: Cymbal question

I took chemical stripper and went after the clear finish on the top hi-hat. It was badly tarnished and impossible to get back to clean, as some areas of the hi-hat had been pounded so much that the clear had worn off, leaving a badly dulled, brass finish.

The stripper takes the clear off in seconds, I hose it off, then polish the brass with a great product I use on the chrome and aluminum pieces of my bike: Luster Care. Turned the cymbal into a friggin' mirror in about 30 minutes.
Sound-wise, nothing has been altered badly—it may even sound better now that's is squeaky clean...
