I think it's D A D F# A D; that's open D tuning. Drop D tuning is D A D G B E.

I think there's a thread about this in the Reference forums.

Motley Crue did a lot with open D- D G C F A D- just like standard E tuning except it's all dropped a whole step.

Exactly! all motleys albums are in that tuning with the exception of the MC94 Corabi album. That album is Whole Step down + Drop C so its C-G-C-F-A-D

If you come over to Motley's site. I have alot of tabs up for alot of the songs in the discography section (in PDF format). The tuning for each song is listed. www.motley.com

I played briefly in Mother Mercy, we used drop C tuning as you outlined there. Up until then I was always at standard E tuning and man that low end was bricks to the head super dee duper crunchy!

nope, that's referred to as "drop-D".

and open D is not merely tuning each string a whole tone down, open D would mean that the *open* strings form a D chord (hence the name)... open G is quite common (of Keith Richards fame) for slide, for instance.

what Motley Crue do is tune down a whole tone, so the 6th and 1st strings are D rather than E. Not sure what that tuning is called, or whether it has a special name... but it surely isn't drop-D or open-D
