Dave is the man. He writes amazing rythm. His solos aren't rocket science but work well with his music. Kirk would be nobody if he were in any other band. He's a nice guy and all, but not much of a player IMO. Never understood why he got Guitar World's MVP award.
OF COURSE DAVE!!! Hammet is boring and very repeatitive. Dave is pure genious and twice the guitar player Hammet is. Why he still cries about getting the boot from Metallica is beyond me. Megadeath is so superior all the way around to Metallica.
I voted for Dave, because above and beyond all he has kept the faith!!!!
The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?
Dave has the technical skills and a mindset to use them. I'd have to go with him. Kirk was a student of Joe Satriani back in the day, but his skills have slipped the last few years. I'd like to see him regain those skills and maybe give Mustaine a run for the money.
You must fear my dancing devil banana! :devilchil
I love 'em both but my vote is squarely with Dave. I think Kirk is a great lead player (despite what seems to be the consensus around here lol!) - his leads are for the most part very memorable despite not always being the most technical. Technicality is only any good to you if you can use it in an imaginative and creative way (ala Vai). He does what he does and does it well. Also I think he does a good job of playing to the stregths of a song and playing what is most appropriate. This is why there are no solos on St.Anger, they're just not those kind of songs. Mustaine on the other hand prob has greater versatilty - I'm mean were comparing a singer / songwriter and front man to a lead guitar player. 'Nuff said. Mustaines lead playing is prob a little sloppy but i think this only enhances his style. Its Metal its aggressive and I love all of his leads. Also Megadeth second guitarists usually are quite clean and precise which counteracts Daves style perfectly. Sorry for the rant but these are 2 of my fav players.
dave dave dave dave dave. can't stand how savagely overrated kirk is. they are both good, but dave writes and plays better, and one one kirk's most famous solos was written by dave mustaine which says a lot
Gotta hand it to Dave. As much as I hate the album, I feel Kirk peaked at Justice solo wise & has gone downhill ever since. Since 88 he probably has put less effort into constructing and assembling memorable solos; and has tended to wing it much more, spontaneously. I feel the problem with that is the guitarist relies too much on one vocabulary or one bag of licks & doesn't challange himself as an artist or composer.
Even with Death Magnetic he's pulled out signature licks from other 80's songs vs. breaking any new ground thematically.
Mustaine hasn't neccesarily re-invented the wheel either. But I think being the main writer in his band he uses that composition muscle much more consistently. Kirk was one of my influences for several years. But like a lot of guys he seems to have stopped evolving as a soloist. Mustaine still surprises me.
