Digital Delay or Digital Reverb

Hey Guys,

I'd like to get your opinion which device you would recommend to get that nice VH arena sound out of your amp. I've been reading that some like to just use a digital delay to achieve a reverb effect - but then there's also the digital reverb pedal too.

So - if you feel that the digital delay is the way to go - which pedal would you recommend and why.

OR - if you feel that the digital reverb is the way to go - then which pedel would you recommend and why.

I'm playing through a Peavey 5150 212 combo - if that helps.

Re: Digital Delay or Digital Reverb

Depends on what VH timeframe you're looking for. Early stuff, I'd say get a Holy Grail reverb and set it for a hall reverb setting to get a big sound. For later stuff (and with your 5150, it would work great) I'd get a Boss DD- 2 or later delay and set it for about 500 ms. Both of these would be in the effects loop. If your looking to buy something though, try and find a Alesis quadraverb GT and put it in the effects loop on the post EQ setting. Don't use any of the preamp controls. Set all preamp stuff to zero and just use the effects. the preamp in it smooths out the sound and sounds just like the Right Here Right Now CD. Should be cheap and you can nail that 90's VH sound perfectly.

Re: Digital Delay or Digital Reverb

I agree! I myself use the delay since I'm settled on one VH sound now, which in itself is tweaked to my taste. I would only use the verb while recording as well as the delay for extra fatness!!!!1

Re: Digital Delay or Digital Reverb

I use an Alesis Midiverb 4 set to slapback delay for my Eddie sound in the Van Halen tribute Unchained. I tried reverb but it sounded too wet; too '80's if you know what I mean. Now the slapback is set to about 40ms and it's 'in your face' without being too wet. I don't know if Eddie bothered much with reverb in the early days...to be honest I wish the 5150 had reverb on it just to add a bit of sauce!

Re: Digital Delay or Digital Reverb

Hi Guys,

After reading about the Holy Grail reverb pedal above, I checked out the reviews on Harmony Central. I noticed a particular review mentioning that reverb pedals should not be used at all on high gain amps. Instead, one should use a digital delay. Does this sound like a valid argument to you guys?

Mab,

Yup, 5150 heads don't have reverb - however, the combos have built-in spring reverb units. Unfortunately the built-in reverb in the combo is not that great

Re: Digital Delay or Digital Reverb

You surely can't use one in front of a high gain amp! It will sound very obnoxious. In the loop is should be fine. Start with the level low and see what happens.
