There not really that stupid IMO. I think they are good at building endurance so you can play for longer periods of time. But, you could also say that practicing will accomplish that, so its all a matter of opinion really.
Edit: This post had no place here, I dunno what I was thinking. Sorry guys.

the Ax Sack, no kidding that's what it was/is called. Supposed to protect your guitar from your belt buckle I s'pose. Dunno, maybe a good idea for the classic "never been played look" but trust me, my ax don't need a "sack" that's why we have TONE

Yeah. They could probably help someone out there, but if you just like practice scales with a metronome you can achieve all that. That's why I think they're retarded.

All the silly pick holding devices intended to hold a pick out of your hand while you play, like those Fender heavy picks with the little metal stick riveted to them. Another one was some plastic thing that held the pick for you while you held the plastic thing, it did'nt even dispense extra picks when your current one wore out, I think that takes the bait for useless. The first time I saw one of those riveted handle guitar picks I thought it was for the Servo Driven guitars at the Experience Music Project or something.

I think Rick Parfitt's invention of plastic vinyl guitar graphics that lay over white guitars is a pretty bad invention. The designs are cheesy.

Facelift my a**! If only I was 10 years again...would love them stickers. Hey, you could use it on the back of the guitar to minimize dings and scratches.

If you mean eight individual strings then yes that's stupid. If you mean the type of eight string bass where each string is doubled up like a 12 string guitar, I have to disagree. I'll even up the ante with a 12 string bass where each normal bass string is accompanied by two higher octave strings. Those things sound awesome! Listen to King's X self titled album from 1992. You will never hear a heavier bass tone than what Doug Pinnick achieved on that album. He bi-amped the higher frequencies into overdriven Fender blackface heads and the low end into Ampeg SVTII heads. Pure awesomeness!

8 string bass (4x2) is all I play (when I play bass) I used them on the last 3 albums I did. 4 string basses sound like ukes compared to my 8's. The sound is incredible.

Guess I'm an 18 year "newbie." I been using tone finger ease for years...but not on my strings. On the back of my necks. Makes them quite slick and easy to play especially when you're sweating under hot lights. And I didn't have to take steel wool to my necks and ruin the finish on them. My Les Paul will still have value 20 years down the road.
Another useless gimmick: a little rod attached to a ring on your finger and they call it a slide. Try rotating it around in the middle of a song or not have it interfere with your other fingers while playing.
Shame of it is most of these gimmicks, whether in use or out of date, made someone a decent bit of money on people looking to take shortcuts.
P.T. Barnum said it best: There's a sucker born every minute.

And they definitely have advantages to using them. Think of it this way, if you were going to play pro sports, you wouldn't lay on your back and do air bench presses, you would use weights to build strength. We've all seen sprinters running with ankle weights on. Fingers are no different no matter what instrument you play. If you build strength, and endurance, you fret cleaner notes, and can play them faster should you choose to.

I understand your connection with sports, but I'm pretty sure no one who has used finger weights can shred faster than Michael Angelo Batio, Joe Stump, Yngwie Malmsteen, or any of those guys. Until I hear Vai saying, "And it was all because of finger weights!" That's when I'll buy them.
