Effects Pedals: To Be or Not To Be

First off, here's my rig:

Guitar -> Pod Pro -> Mesa P290 -> 5150 Cab

My second amp is a Line 6 Flextone 2 (same modeling as pod pro). Anyway, the question is... I'm thinking about getting into the world of effects pedals. I'm really wanting a Digitech Whammy to play with, and I will eventually get a rackmount maximizer. But what I was wondering, would I benefit from things like a boss compression/sustainer, overdrive, etc etc.

I'm happy with my tones from the pod units, and I had the floorboard with the volume and wah (it was stolen, looking to replace it someday) but I want something extra. This is why I was thinking digitech whammy, but will a compressor help too?

If you want more effect, just build up a pedal lineup. Make sure you check the Line6 Tonecore range. They have lost of really neat stuff right now.

Isnt there allready a comp in the pod? I'd go with the whammy. I've got a Boss pitch shifter and love it, the whammy is quite similar and sounds great.

bought the digitech and the compressor/sustainer. Yeah, the pod has it, but I don't like it that well. Got a deal on the compressor, was a display for half off with a like-new warranty

I love pedals. I think they give the choice of picking the one you like best. I've got a bunch and love them all.
